A crazy week in the tech world means a fun show for TechFan! First, Google buys Motorola’s mobile devision for HOW MUCH? Yikes. Then, HP kills off not only the new WebOS devises, but all their consumer PC business to boot. Double yikes! Finally, would you rather have forty iOS games, or one Nintendo 3DS game?

It’s a mixed bag of the fun and deadly serious this week as David Cohen brings us up to date on the rioting, looting, and rampant disorder going on in London and the rest of the U.K. this week and how technology is playing a part. Then, in the second half of the show, Tim and David go back in time to May 2005, and take a listen to MyMac Podcast 27 in which then hosts Chad Perry and Tim Robertson (Yes, THAT Tim Robertson) had a segment in which they rated the current Apple rumors. How did they do? Listen to find out, it’s a can’t miss!

No Gaz tonight so Owen Rubin joins Guy and they discuss all the latest just announced at Apple’s World Wide Developer’s Conference. You get their takes on OS X Lion, iOS 5, the wireless syncing for iOS devices to come, the iCloud, and just what the heck is iTunes Match? Lastly, as it turns out, all this SoundBoard silliness is OWEN’S fault!

Finally!

On June 7, 2011, in Apple, Features, iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Opinion, by Scott Willsey

It’s hard to express the sense of relief I feel after the 2011 WWDC keynote by Steve Jobs today. FINALLY. Apple does get it.

For months (years?), many of us have been increasingly impatient for untethered syncing for our iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads. We’ve seen tantalizing glimpses of the potential that iOS devices that do not require a computer for full functionality could provide. For years, many people have been wishing for an easier way to manage our media and make it easier to get it on the devices that we are going to take with us, whether that be our laptops, iPods, iPhones, or iPads.

Now, thanks to some much overdue and needed features coming in OS X Lion, iOS 5, and iCloud, my daughter will never know a time when media was cumbersome to move around, or when a portable computing device required a less portable computing device for activation, backups, and updates. And that’s good. I have experienced all that, and can’t see why anyone else should. There’s no way that a forward looking computing future could continue on such a clunky, outdated model.

This is a very anti-establishment show this time around as it seems Microsoft was probably listening last week as we criticized them and as a result, Skype was behaving very badly! They probably won’t be pleased with THIS show either as Guy goes through hell trying to get a product license for his LEGALLY purchased copy of Windows 7. No matter, lots of great stuff with an iChat chat, John Nemo’s Wife loves animals, and one of Gaz’s hard drive enclosures takes a dirt nap. Guy is very angry (SO angry!) with LodSys, the latest patent troll that takes a novel approach at getting money from Apple buy suing iOS developers and frankly we aren’t very pleased with Apple either as doing something as simple as a hard drive swap spins your fans to the max.

For a show that started off with Guy desperately trying to find a topic, they sure talked a lot. Some email and Twitter questions are up first, followed by a long discussion about Apple’s new shiny iMacs (Oh that quad-core goodness!) and another on how iMovie for iOS is NOT the only game in town.

Tim and David delve into Amazon’s Android App store and disagree, then a short rant on the TSA performing pat downs on children. Also, Cisco has killed off the Flip, and Tim and David spend just a few moments on ideas that no one had at Cisco to rescue the produce, apparently. Finally, Nintendo is rumored to be releasing a new home console system very soon, so the topic turns to the Wii and what Nintendo should have in the next system.

Don doesn’t have another daughter with an 18th birthday this week, so he couldn’t reasonably get away from the GMen. We talk a bit about his methods and madness when doing screencasts (in the middle of crazy GarageBand delays which screws all of us up). We also chat up a new possible version of Final Cut Pro (which naturally DID happen RIGHT after we finished recording), Jailbreaking iOS devices, and discover that Don is a bit Squirrelly.

LOT’S of feedback this week (HooRAY! We love feedback!) from Skype and Twitter about iPads and what gear to buy. Allison Sheridon of the NosillaCast Podcast takes exception to Guy calling the Dexim charger fun but worthless, and Gaz’s iPhoto library is slowing to a crawl! What’s up with THAT? Lastly, sometimes the best iOS App is none at all.

Allison Sheridan from the NosillaCast Podcast at Podfeet.com joins the GMen for a ROCKING Christmas show! We talk a bit about how she does her podcast and mention cute furry rodents a lot (SQUIRREL!). Turns out Gaz has never seen Pixar’s “Up!” but we love him anyway. The GMen do a Quick Review of Elevate Entertainment’s Zombie Ala Mode for iOS and somehow manage to keep the show under one hour.

One Feature iOS is Missing

On December 14, 2010, in Features, iPad, iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, Opinion, by Donny Yankellow

I love my iPad and I use it for many tasks that I would normally do on my computer. However, there is still one task I always have to go to the computer for. I can’t upload a file from my iPad to a website.

For example, I am typing this post on my iPad right now. If I want to upload an image to the article I can’t unless I go to my iMac. There are many times I need to upload something to a website and can’t do it because I am on my iPad. This might be for an article I am writing or another project I am working on.

Wouldn’t it be nice for those browse buttons on webpages could work and access the file system on the iPad? Or Dropbox?

I can’t think of many new features for the next version of iOS, but this is definitely on my wish list.

What features do you want in the iOS?
