MyMac Podcast #488 – iOX FaceMessages

On December 26, 2013, in Podcast, by MyMac

mymac488
So like chocolate and peanut butter, what could Apple shmoosh together from OS X and iOS to make either better? Oh and apparently Guy and Gaz say some funny stuff. Geez what did you expect? It’s almost Christmas.

I could quibble about recording as a MOV file instead of pure audio, but they include tools for conversion. It’s what I use to record those huge amounts of calls to our Skype line.

MyMac Podcast #487 – Random Stuff

On December 18, 2013, in Podcast, by The MyMac Podcast

mymac487
OK, so not a lot of things going on Apple-wise so the GMen talk about their FEELINGS. Well not really, but their kids did get a good going over with what they’re up to. Lots of great stuff from you guys over on Google Plus, so they talk about that too. Yep, Pretty random.

MyMac Podcast 486: Android winning market-share…losing the future

On December 10, 2013, in Podcast, by The MyMac Podcast

mymac486
There’s a lot said about Android devices gaining all the market-share, but very little about what kinds of devices these are, or what people use them for. As it turns out, mostly cheap, old, and not all that good for much. Gaz and Guy look deeper into it while still managing their usual shenannigans.

People’s Pick: From Eric Stone. Here is a great people’s pick for everybody.  Sonic Dash is an excellent endless runner, like Temple Run.  You get to play as Sonic the hedgehog and run through a colorful world full of baddies, spikes, bombs, you will even loop upside down on occasion.  It is free in the App Store as a universal app for iPad and iPhone.  It has in-app purchases but you definitely don’t need to purchase any of them to play or enjoy the game.

We reach our big 200th anniversary is which we do exactly what we do each week! YAY! We finish the interview with Larry O’Connor from OWC, answer some listener feedback, and generally have a good time. The bit at the end is X-Tra (snickt) long this week just because it was kinda goofy.

Larry O’Connor joins the GMen in a chat about Apple products, what OWC can do to make them better, and what we all think Apple could do to make them easier to upgrade. Not that we’re trying to sell you anything. The interview went on so long we split it up into two! Next week for show 485 (which will be our 200th show) we’ll have the second half of the interview. MyMac Podcast 482 – Where is that EUREKA moment?

On November 14, 2013, in Podcast, by The MyMac Podcast

mymac482
New TVs, automobile accidents, HUGE watches that control scoreboards, and iCloud solutions make up quite a bit of this week’s show. The GMen also talk about what’s Cooking (oh so clever seque) over at Apple. Of course a lot of your comments as well along with a lot of Guy and Gaz nonsense. So buckle up, sit back, and enjoy the ride!

MyMac Podcast 481: Gaz is in the Air!

On November 5, 2013, in Podcast, by The MyMac Podcast

mymac481
If you prefer short, concise, well prepared and documented shows, you are gonna HATE this week’s episode. We badger Reggie Ashworth into joining us and that made for a longer than usual podcast. Gaz has a new iPad Air and Guy is VERY jealous (but trying hard not to show it so why he’s writing that in these show notes in the third person perspective is a mystery). Plus LOTS of feedback from our listeners and just the usual insanity of the GMen.

So much NEW stuff that Apple has released! So much recorded stuff the GMen can’t play for you! What do these things have in common? Not much really, but it seemed like hype sells and we wanted in on the action! Gaz likes certain things and Guy likes other certain things. Listen to find out who liked what and why.

MyMac Podcast 479: But am I Paranoid Enough?

On October 23, 2013, in Podcast, by The MyMac Podcast

mymac479
Even for us this was an unusual show. It didn’t seem lie it was going to be, but with the GMen you kinda get what you get. Our actual serious discussion is about conflicting tones in Apple’s description of whether or not they can or could or would be able to read or intercept (not the same thing) your texts in iMessage. Gaz’s Tips turns into a bit of a controversy over UK and US based keyboards and the People’s Pick does something, we’re just not exactly sure what it is.

MyMac Podcast 478: iOS is made for Business

On October 17, 2013, in Podcast, by The MyMac Podcast

mymac478
Guy has his new iPhone 5S so everyone should be pleased that he’ll stop whining about it now. Gaz is VERY unhappy with iTunes and podcasts so we can rant about that. However he did make a framed picture so less unhappy. Not sure what the scale would be between happy or not at this point. Businesses in general seem to be pretty happy with iOS so that’s a good thing as lot’s of companies want to cater to that market. Gaz and Guy break it down a bit and say why in their opinion it’s the better platform than other mobile devices.

So STILL no new iPhones for either GMan, but it’s looking like Gaz will get his first. Not that Guy is bitter or anything. They can’t remember what the bet was they made that if Guy loses, Gaz punches him in the nose so Guy lucks out there. MyMac Podcast 475: iOS 7, NOT quite a bit of heaven

On September 25, 2013, in Podcast, by The MyMac Podcast

mymac475
It seems both GMen are getting new iPhones. Guy will be seeing his probably sooner than Gaz due to Apple’s unofficial US first policy. Gaz has a tale of woe about Apple’s AppleTV update which seems to have disappeared. They talk about some of their likes and dislikes about iOS 7 and if you like the after show stuff, you’ll LOVE this episode! Big thanks to all our G+ fans for all their contributions.

People’s Pick: From Karl Madden -:- Stickman Downhill for IOS £0.69 ($0.99 Guess)
Possible People Pick? There are games and then there are GAMES that suck away hours of your life! Stickman Downhill is a simple premise, just control your little guy on the bike as he powers down various hillsides while jumping over gaping gaps and petrifying plummets. It might not be the most original game but it’s darn addictive and highly entertaining.

Balanced – Get More Out of Life – Review

On September 19, 2013, in iOS, Review, by Peter Nikolaidis

Balanced – Get more out of life

Price: Free
iTunes Link

For the last few weeks, I’ve been playing with a new iOS app called Balanced – Get more out of life. Balanced is good for reminding you to perform recurring tasks, but it is not a traditional “todo” list. You would not, for instance, put a reminder to “buy milk,” or do something that is time-sensitive into Balanced — it’s for recurring tasks that you want to accomplish. Balanced seeks to help you keep your life in balance, and rewards you for doing so with some motivational feedback.

MyMac Podcast #474 – 2 Phones…1 OS

On September 18, 2013, in Podcast, by The MyMac Podcast

mymac474
It’s almost all about the new phones. Guy doesn’t necessarily want one as his 4S is still working well, but ropes his son into the equation so he (sigh) has no choice. Gaz wants one now because of the better camera but ALSO wants a new iPad Mini that he has no choice about either because his family is always (sigh) on the full sized one. What are GMen to do except just bite the bullet and (sigh) go ahead and buy new iPhones. Because they really have no choice as was reasoned above.

MyMac Podcast 473: Brightening Everyone’s Day

On September 10, 2013, in Podcast, by Tim Robertson

mymac473
The GMen are back and just before an Apple event that will no doubt delight and astound us all! Or maybe it’ll just be a phone or two. Anyway Gaz and Guy have a good time catching up on Guy’s Florida trip and his attempts as pitiful as they were at surfing. They look at some issues of the day and continuously get sidetracked away from what they started talking about. In other words, just as it ever was!

Seagate Central Shared Storage Device – Review

On September 10, 2013, in NAS, Review, by Larry Grinnell

Seagate Central Shared Storage Device
Manufacturer: Seagate
MSRP: $169 (2 TB), $229 (4 TB), available at discount pricing online.
Seagate Central

As reported on this site in some of my reviews over the last few years, I’m a huge fan of NAS (Network Attached Storage) technology. At present, I own a large RAID 5 NAS, with a slave unit to back up the first unit. Why? I have this much storage to support my media server. All my movies, TV shows, music, etc., are stored on my NAS, and its manufacturer keeps adding interesting new tools to keep their devices up to date, such as cloud support (the buzzword du jour), making it easy to connect to my NAS from anywhere in the world.

central-right-500pxBut wait a minute! This review is all about the Seagate® Central. For under $170.00 for the 2 TB model and under $230.00 for the 4 TB model, it’s competitive with any number of NAS devices. One thing they don’t have, however, is the killer brand of Seagate. Seagate has been around for a long time, because they make superior products and because they’re quick to innovate with appropriate new technology, and they back their products up. My experiences with Seagate go back to my first office PC (sorry, Mac users…) that had a Seagate ST-225 20 megabyte (yes, megabyte) hard drive. It was built like a tank and never failed me. But I digress…

Power on the Go — Peace of Mind in a sack!

Our inventory of battery operated, USB charged, personal devices grows longer and longer. This situation translates into a greater likelihood of finding one of these running out of power at a critical moment. This could prevent you from keeping the kids entertained on a long trip or from getting that message from your spouse to pick up a gallon of milk on the way home from work.
