UltraDock v5
Nemo Memo

On May 15, 2012, in Adapter, Dock, Features, First Look, Hard Drive, Macintosh, Nemo Memo, Review, by John Nemerovski

WiebeTech UltraDock v5
CRU-DataPort
Price: $249 U.S.

I have tested and used every WiebeTech bare drive dock going back to the original FireWire Drive Dock, released around the time Steve Wozniak stopped shaving. UltraDock v5 from CRU-DataPort, the parent company of WiebeTech, is the best drive dock ever, period. It has been years since v4 was released, and the long wait was worthwhile.

The premise and purpose of UltraDock v5 (abbreviated here as UDv5) is straightforward for a techie and completely bewildering to a normal person. When an internal hard drive, such as the one residing within your Macintosh or iOS device, is removed from the case of the source product, the exposed hard drive is often still usable even when the computer or iPod or iPhone or iPad has stopped working.

A technically savvy person in a Mac repair shop, or your cousin’s next door neighbor’s brother-in-law, typically can retrieve the crucial data from the exposed internal drive that is now external, if not by choice. Enter UDv5, center stage.

Sandvox 2.5

 App Store

Almost 6 years ago I reviewed Sandvox 1.0 for MyMac.com (http://www.mymac.com/2006/06/sandvox-review/), and I wasn’t to fond of it. I gave it a 2.5 out of 5. Fast forward to today and I am reviewing Sandvox 2.5. Was 1.5 versions newer enough to make me like it? Read on to find out.

Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt Adapters – First Look – Nemo Memo

Internet prices: $100 and $190 (approximately)

It’s not easy to test these innovative new Thunderbolt adapters from Seagate. I needed a compatible GoFlex portable hard drive with its removable USM cable module, and a GoFlex Desk hard drive with removable base, both of  which I have. I needed an Apple Thunderbolt cable, which I didn’t have. I needed a Thunderbolt-equipped Macintosh, which I also don’t have.

Seagate provided our evaluation GoFlex Thunderbolt adapters. Then they sent a $50 Apple Thunderbolt cable. So far so good. A local retail establishment generously provided the latest 15 inch MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt port. One of my Mac tutorial clients agreed to let me use his new 13 inch MacBook Air. I was ready to proceed.

Guy and Gaz back recording together but a few days early because Gaz has to go off to Turkey (OH the HORROR!). All kinds of drama happening (none of which did we actually put on the show because…well…it’s drama). Gaz finally moves to iCloud, you great listeners come through again with feedback, why is Popeye afraid of Bluto (not to worry, it all makes sense), and how many iPads can you steal at one time? A woman in Texas just needs to know. Also, replacing your laptop with an iPad can (but should it?) be done and in this first part of an ongoing series we tell you how. First up, keyboards.
