As a digital photography teacher, card readers have become invaluable in my classroom. Students come with different cameras the need different cables. Card reader solve this problem, if they read enough card formats. The Verbatim Universal Card Reader is my new reader of choice.

Why is this card reader better than any other? Is it the compact size? It is about 1/2 inch thick and 2×5 inches. No it isn’t the size.

Is it the little USB cable extension that hides into the unit? Nope.

Is it the cool copy button on top that automatically transfers the files from the card to your computer? Definitely not. The button only works on Windows machines, and I work on a Mac and have Macs in my classroom. This is actually a downside to the unit. It would be really nice if this was Mac compatible.

Is it the price? No. $29.99 is a little pricey for a card reader. However, you can easily find this reader for under $20. I found it at several locations for $14.99.

Here is what makes this a great card reader. The reader can read the following formats: CompactFlash Type 1 & 2, Microdrive, Memory Stick MS, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo,  MagicGate, MagicGate Duo, SmartMedia, Secure Digital, SDHC, MiniSD, MicroSD with Adapter*, MultiMediaCard, RS-MMC and xD-Picture Card.

You see that last format: xD? This is the first card reader I have found that can read that format. I have several students who come in with a Fuji camera and an XD card. None of the card readers at my school (and there are several) can read that format.

So, if you need a card reader you might want to check this one out.
