Finding time for fun stuff is getting harder and harder to find. Besides having a full-time job, I’m also the Father of two boys who seem determined to make me old before my time. I remember as a young boy, chaffing against the rules imposed by my Mother (she who must be obeyed) thinking that when I was a parent, I sure wouldn’t be doing the awful, restrictive things that my parents did to me.
Of course this was said silently (I was never the suicidal type) and much to my dismay, I have found that I am doing almost EXACTLY the same things with my kids as my parents did to me. It has forced me to come to the conclusion that maybe’¦just maybe’¦my parents knew a few more things than I was giving them credit for all those years ago. Like how to keep a kid from making incredibly stupid, life threatening blunders. Teaching respect for those who came before us. Never forgetting that while technology may change the way we live our lives, there really isn’t anything new under the sun as far as the human condition goes. Most of the same temptations that beckoned to me as a kid, my parents had already dealt with when they were my age. Those same things are now affecting my kids and they seem shocked to discover that dear old Dad has already tread that ground and that I’m usually one step ahead of them. Or at least I like to think I am.
I started all this by talking about fun stuff. On the fun stuff short list is my continuing writing duties for MyMac.com. I know I’ve been a little quiet on the blog front since the Mac on the Intel thing came out last month and the only reason I can think of is embarrassment. I read some of my blogs prior to the announcement now and it’s painful. So full of myself and righteously indignant that ANYONE could come to an opposite conclusion to what I believed to be true at the time. Life is a learning experiment I suppose and I’m trying to move on. To stop writing because I was so dreadfully wrong and embarrassed is denying myself one of the true pleasurable experiences that I have during those incredibly short periods of leisure time that I can steal. So, I guess I’m back on the blog side again.
I wasn’t really completely silent of course. I’ve done two ‘Problem Solving Guy’ collaborations with John Nemo (The latest of which has just come online) and that has been a great outlet for my writing talents (HA!) and I thank John for not only coming up with the topics and questions, but for his patience and editing skills (Kudos to Tim on that front as well) that make me a much better writer than I have the right to claim. I also give both him and Tim credit for encouraging my next venture here at MyMac; a series of segments for the MyMac.com podcast talking about Dashboard widgets tentatively titled, ‘The Dashboard Minute.’ Just doing this small little bit gave me further appreciation for how hard Tim and Chad work on coming up with a weekly show.
Coming up as well is an article on a great independent Mac store I found while on vacation in Boise, Idaho called, MacLife. If you live anywhere near Boise, stop in and say ‘Guy’ sent me. Chances are they’ll have no idea what you mean.
