What Is More Popular Than The iPod?

Yeah, we Macophiles live in our own world, don’t we? Can’t be helped. All these insanely great, technologically advanced, world-class designed devices that Apple sells us, coupled with regular doses of Saint Steve’s Reality Distortion Field, who wouldn’t be a Macophile or Machead?

iPods are the wonder of the world, with all their sales exceeding the combined sales of every other portable music player in the world, right? Even though Apple did not invent the player. Even though it came on the scene later than most others.

However, the above is not true, strictly speaking. There is another portable music player that outsells every iPod and MP3 player on the market, by a margin of three to one.

What? You never heard of this? Well, it was a shock to me when I read it too.

HERE is the link.

What is it, you ask?

It is the lowly CD player. You know, the ones you can buy for $20 and change? CD plyers outsell all iPods and portable music players three to one, even today.

I wondered why this should be, but it seems obvious that people like the fact that they are cheap, certainly. It is estimated that there are up to six of these cheap CD players per household in the US of A.

Bit I also wonder if they are not also extremely easy to use as well. No downloading. No playlists to configure. No hookups to a computer or other device. Just pop in your own CD and play your music. And you thought the iPod was easy to use, right?

What could be easier?

Well, I have my trusty iBook, and even though it costs a bit more than a cheap CD player, I use it to play my CDs for me, while I work or surf. I plug in my expensive Bose (TM) headset and I am set, listening to Bond, Karl Zero, or Sinatra while I look for things to write about. How married to a device can you get?

I wonder? Do you own a CD player? Do you ever use it instead of your iPod? Maybe this phenomenon only applies to everyone else who is not yet a Macophile.
