Two Best Movies of 2003 Are …

On the eve of the Oscars I’m bursting to inform our readers that my two favorite films from last year will be nowhere in sight at tomorrow’s Academy Awards ceremony.

Each movie has its own web site, easily located by doing a Google or similar search.

Nemo’s runner up is LOVE ACTUALLY, a sappy, predictable, and totally enjoyable comedy from England. If you want modern “adult” fun, here it is in abundance. Witty script, terrific acting, zany plot, and subtle humor. I’m not a Hugh Grant fan, and he’s very good as the Prime Minister. My favorite actor is the guy who portrays an aging rock star with perfection. This movie is still showing here in Tucson at our cheepo theatres, so you may be able to locate it on a big screen in your town. The story will play well on your little screen at home, so throw a party and enjoy yourselves watching LOVE ACTUALLY. Terrible title but delightful picture. Can’t wait to see it again. Oh yes — the theme is Christmas, but any time of the year will be fine for watching.

Nemo’s top pick is BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM, long gone from theatres and easily available on video. This cross-cultural family film is even more predictable than LOVE ACTUALLY, and also more satisfying. A cohesive, if chaotic, plot deals with aspirations and frustrations of youth and parents, with great relationships and characters. I had heard so much about this film (just like I had concerning my previous year’s favorite, MONSOON WEDDING) that I thought it couldn’t possibly surprise me or win me over with its corny charms. I have a soft spot for movies about India, about sports, and about kids, so BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM scored many goals with me. Invite some fun-loving youngsters or oldsters over to catch this movie as a team.

Great! Now I can get a decent night’s sleep on Sunday instead of enduring another endless Oscar pageant.
