Sorta kinda my first blog

Most of you regular readers have read David K every’s blog on the anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings that basically ended the major fighting in World War 2. It generated quite a few responses, most of which said the same thing over and over (Get a hint Steve).

It reminded me of when I first came to MyMac.com and started contributing regularly. There was an article concerning Osama’s letter to the US after the 911 attacks spelling out why he did it. The article in question also generated a lot of responses, one of which I’m reposting here. There is a reason why we have seperation of church and state in this country as religion can bring out the worst in its most fanatical devotes. It also goes into why after a certain point, arguments are pointless. So here it is.

While I appreciate the endless ramblings of unanswerable questions and arguments that neither side will concede any points (Which, quite frankly makes them neither arguments OR debates), what the hell does any of this have to do with continuing my enjoyment and furthering my understanding of the computer platform of my choice?

Osama bin Laden’s reasoning behind his various obsessions is immaterial. ANYTIME the reason for violence is “because God said it was OK and He is on our side”, it proves a fundemental flaw in the judgement of the person who said it. If one accepts that God created the universe and all things in it (a point I will concede for lack of any other explanation), our enemies as well as our friends are all children of God. I have heard the expression from many fundies that all life is precious (their basic argument against abortion), but that statement seems invalid unless your belief system is identical to theirs. In THAT argument, it seems they do indeed have much in common with the fanatical muslims. Frankly I wish they would all (Religious fanatics of any stripe) find a great big stadium somewhere and play king of the mountain until they were all gone.

Life is precious, but the greatest gift given to mankind is free will. God does not sit up high and COMMAND that we worship Him (A silly concept for an omnipitant being). We are given a choice. If your choice is to enslave or kill those that don’t worship like you (something that every religion has proponents of) then don’t expect some kind of eternal reward for your actions. I confess that I am not a well educated man. Considering the various directions this post has gone, this will not come as a surprise to anyone. Just High School, Community College (We called it TinkerToy Tech), and 6 years of extensive world traveling (Near 70 countries).

What I have discovered in my travels is something that might seem basic, but many here in the privilaged world (The US, Europe, and most of Asia) have not understood. Ready? Here it is. Most people just want to be left the hell alone. They mostly don’t care about politics, or the world economy. They want to be able to feed themselves and their children and hope they have a better life than the ones their parents had. They are usually suprised when the world focuses it’s attention on them and more likely than not wish it wouldn’t. That does not mean however that as a world power we can stick our heads in the sand either. No matter what argument you have about the Iraq war, the world is better off without Sadaam. The weapons available today are horrible to contemplate on the battlefield much less civillian areas. Pre-emptive actions against those who would use them in such a way is here to stay. You can neither wish them away or the people who would use them. Imagining the world as a better place will not make it such. Do I have any answers? Nope, and don’t pretend to.

I posted another reply just after that. It said,” Can we PLEASE get back to talking about Macs now?”
