Octava 4×1 HDMI Switch with 4×1 Optical Audio
Review

I had a problem (I’m sure my brother, Guy Serle, would put that statement into the present tense…). I started putting together a home theater system with a 1.67 GHz Core Duo Mac mini at its heart. That’s when I discovered I was short some inputs.

Creating Cool HTML 4 Web Pages
Review

Not only does this book go into the basics, but also gives excellent detail on HTML tagging, with most of the important modifiers needed for text formatting, as well as special-case features, and they all still work on today’s browsers (except maybe the old Netscape “blink” tag).

The Principles of Beautiful Web Design
Book Review

Here’s a clue for you: designer Jason Beaird’s The Principles of Beautiful Web Design showed up in my mailbox shortly after publication this past April, and the first thing I did was drop everything and read it from cover to cover. For the record, I build Web sites myself and have a number of art and design classes to my credit. Jason Beaird paid a lot more attention to his teachers, and it shows.

Painter Essentials 4
Review

Painter Essentials is to Painter what Photoshop Elements is to Photoshop. It is what I would call the “slimmed” down version of Painter, but still fully usable. Just like Painter, Essentials is a natural media painting program that allows the user to paint and draw on the computer with tools he/she might use in “real life.” Also, like Painter X (which I reviewed earlier this year), Painter Essentials 4 is packed with great new features.

Adobe Illustrator CS3
Review

Graphic Designers have very little choice today in vector drawing programs, but the undisputed champion is Adobe’s Illustrator. CS3 is the thirteenth version of the program. Does it move ahead in innovation, stability (a big problem with the CS2 version) or just the version number? Read Tim Robertson’s review to find out.

The BOOK BYTES INTERVIEW with Ben Long

We live in a world that is driven by — and at the mercy of — massive levels of technology. We NEED more people to understand technology, and we need people to not be afraid of it, and we need them to learn to work with it, because we are now dependent on it.

Initial Reactions to Mail and Stationary

One of the upgrades that I looked most forward to for my business was Apple’s new Mail Stationery feature. I’ve always wanted a way to send graphic emails as opposed to simple text-based letters. I’ve tried using various programs – both web-based and 3rd party applications, but all of them were too time consuming for simply creating a few graphic personal or business letters that I wanted to do right within my Mail application.

Oyen Digital External 2.5” Firewire Drive 250
Review

I have several small, 2.5” external drives that I use for moving data between Macs, or bringing data back and forth to my workplace, or to carry with me on business trips packed with movies. They all look like a typical hard drive case, except this one. I would call this the “sexiest” looking 2.5” drive case I’ve ever seen. Read the review and see if you don’t agree.

iPhoto CD Automator Action

I recently blogged about a missing feature from iPhoto which lets you burn a CD of photos that is not in iPhoto format, but instead a CD of JPG images that any computer can read and that you could take to the store for developing in a photo machine. Right after I posted that blog, I discovered a way to create an Automator action to do this for you.
