iOS Desktop. Time for it happen.

It should not come to a shock to anyone who follows Apple that they like doing things themselves when it comes to design of both hardware and software and this is now extended to the very processors that iOS devices use.

Loopback by Rogue Amoeba – Review

People who deal with audio on a regular basis are a persnickety bunch. They want everything to work in just a certain way and sometimes try to cram functionality with hardware and software to do things neither was meant to do. Or perhaps I’m projecting my own idiosyncrasies on everyone. No matter, if you have to deal with audio from various sources, you probably are already aware of Rogue Amoeba and some of their applications like Audio Hijack and NiceCast to name just a few.

All that Jide! (1st look)

No, MyMac has not become an Android site (unless Tim follows through on his threat to switch if Apple drops the headphone jack in the next iPhone), but while surfing around I found an article talking about a company called Jide. Never heard of them?

So there’s the thing called the Maltese Cube

OK, in the VERY FIRST thing I wrote for mysite the oldmanlion.com for my eventual new book, I mentioned a story I wrote called the Maltese Cube and that I wasn’t particularly proud of it. Meanwhile back in the real world, I now have it in Apples iBook Store, in Amazons Kindle eBook Store, and now available as well as a paperback through Amazon. Karl Madden of the Mac & Forth podcast and I are rewriting it as an audio play that should be released at some point this year as a podcast. So what happened?

History in the (re) making

John Sculley former CEO of Apple says he regrets “The Apple Board” removing Steve Jobs from the company over the direction the company was going. Looking at history, how different would things be today if somehow Steve Jobs had been able to curb his (at the time) MASSIVE ego and continue to work in a diminished role at Apple under Sculley.

What comes first? The chicken or the egg?

Don’t you just LOVE nonsensical phrases? Especially when it comes to tech. I mean, what could eggs and chicken and the order in which they appeared in nature have to do with technology outside of a certain Colonel’s automated deep fryer? Well my little chickadees, I’m here to tell you and it won’t be pretty.

Seagate 1TB Wireless Plus – Review

People love their iPads, iPhones, iPod touches, and will most likely love whatever new iThings Apple comes out with in the future. They’re fast, efficient, portable, capable of nearly anything you might want a desktop or laptop computer for, but there’s a basic need in which they are sorely lacking. No, it isn’t multiple user support, or better multi-tasking, or its lack of a usable file system (though it sure would be nice if they included some of those). Its storage. Seagate has something that will give you that storage and a lot of it!

The problem with wearables

Myfundamentalissuewith all these wearables is that for more than really basic functionality (or less than that) you need it to be tied to a phone. Apple’s watch is no different in thatregard. So how can it be better? From the mind that said Apple should stop making Macs and let others clone and that they would NEVER release two different sized phones at the same time! So be warned.

Pako (the unwinnable game) – Review

So here’s the premise. Take a car with no brakes and an accelerator stuck to the floor in a parking lot filled with obstacles. Now add insane police that have absolutely no sense of self-preservation when it comes down to their one goal…to get you. That’s the basics for an iOS game called Pako by Tree Men games.

I got your innovation…right HERE!

People say Apple hasn’t innovated in a long time (mostly non-Apple users and analysts looking for page views) but maybe they have and most people just haven’t caught on yet. Continuing on their strengths as a mobile platform, Apple’s iOS is getting ready to take the mobile audio world by storm and doing it in a very unApple way.

DOES Apple need to release an actual Apple TV?

The quick answer is no. The longer answer is HELL no! However that rarely stops bloggers with little else to do (apparently) from talking incessantly about how Apple should not only release an actual Apple-branded Television set, but it should be 4K! And sparkly! With rainbows shooting out of its butt!

How To Record A Podcast Without A Mixer

OK (I hear you asking). Just HOW does Guy create the MyMac Podcast each week with such incredible skill, good taste, and handsome features? I may be projecting a bit on that last one…and maybe the others too, but with a little help (and by little I mean almost all the credit) from Dave Hamilton from the Mac Geek Gab I managed to finally get it working consistently.

An AppleTV TV set? Why?

For quite some time various Apple watchers have been talking about an AppleTV as an actual television set. Oh so very high end with all the gizmos and gadgets and whirly-like features that Sony, Samsung, and so many others have been trying to cram into their TV sets with varying amounts of success. It would have 3-D! And 4K resolution! And connect to the internet to update your FaceBooks and Twitters (for your grandparents, their AOL mail), and Farmville statuses! It would connect to Skype and your front door camera you have out there to see the UPS guy delivering whatever stuff you ordered from the Amazons! WOW! The future looks BRIGHT!

Why innovation doesn’t always mean brand new

ALL tech companies copy. It’s all built on what came before. It’s how it’s implemented and the infrastructure built around it that matters and few companies out side of Apple, Google, and possibly Samsung seem to do it very well. Market-share, sales, and profits are three very different things. Having massive market-share (only Apple makes the Mac which means they have nearly a 100% market-share, but when taken in context to ALL PC sales have only 5-10%) doesn’t equal big sales nor profits.

Where I think Apple is going (seriously)

So here’s where we are. The press going crazy for an Apple product that doesn’t officially exist and tons of articles already saying it’s either the best thing they’ve ever done or a huge mistake with not too much in between. Well no surprise there as you could take the flotsam of Apple articles on any given day over the last ten years and see exactly the same thing. Will there be an iWatch or whatever? I have no idea and honestly (wait for it) iDon’tcare.

IN-N-OUT Burger (A Review)

Everyone tired of hearing about my journey to San Francisco for the Macworld Expo yet? I know I’m tired of talking about it. So blaah, blah, blah long trip, snowy roads, attacked by a crazy feline, airport security, bumpy flight, taxicab, hotel. Are we good? Terrific. Let’s talk about something else. My craving for an In-and-Out burger instead.

Getting there is half the fun (not)

Contrary to popular belief, traveling is not fun. No matter what method you use, there are always hassles. Go by car? Traffic jams especially in the northeast corridor. Flying brings its own joys like dealing with the TSA and the potential for full body cavity searches (unless you’re into that kind of thing). You can probably go by train or bus, but that just takes too long. Trains can be fun, just not in the United States and buses aren’t any fun no matter where you live. In my case each year for the Macworld Expo I try to combine the worst of both worlds.
