By gosh, By Golly, he (Dvorak) has done it again! And what is the “it” I refer to? Surprise. He has surprised me yet again. How so? Well, we go for months (years?) without hearing a peep out of him, and then, just when I think that John Dvorak “won’t be down for breakfast”, there he is.
There are people out there who simply cannot stand it when Apple has a success, whether that success is a rising stock price, or a successful product. It drives them freaking nuts. And why is this? Well, no one can truly say.
It must be rough to be a true windows zealot today. The windows platform has become synonymous with security problems, including malware, spyware, viruses, and hacking. Anyone care to take a guess as to long it takes a brand new windows box to get hacked, or infected, when plugged into a broadband internet connection, without protection? Minutes? Seconds? Ever try to get rid of spyware on a friend’s PC? It’s probably more desireable to have oral surgery.
The imitators of the iPod just aren’t making it. (And didn’t Mr. Dell originally put down the iPod, calling it “stupid”, and “sure to fail”? refresh my memory please) A Newsweek article ( “iPod Nation”,July 26th, 2004) refers to the iPod’s imitators as “second players”. I don’t think the expression “Dell DJ Nation” is going to be heard by anyone, anytime soon. (Although I can’t wait to hear what “Mister Loudmouth” a.k.a. Steven Ballmer, is going to come with next. Always a good source of amusement. Remember his “iPod users are thieves” diatribe? This guy should be doing stand up in Vegas. All he needs is a sequined blazer and matching bow tie.)
I find it interesting and amusing that market share comes up as much as it does, when talking about Mac Vs. PC. It never comes when discussing any other product line, does it? I have never heard anyone who owns a Honda say that “BMW is doomed, because they don’t have any market share”, have you? How about Vacuum cleaners? Is Electrolux doomed, because their product is too expensive, and they don’t have as much marker share as Hoover? Is Rolex “doomed”, since they don’t sell as many watches as Timex?
They just can’t stand it.
In the course of my day-to-day existence, I see lots of Macs. Aging, but still functioning, beige G3’s, laptops of all types, G4’s, and an ever growing number of G5’s. Let’s not forger the “Super Cluster”, built at virgina tech, all from G5’s, then upgraded to X-Serve’s.
Market share numbers? Beats me as to where they’re coming from. It does always seem to be the last refuge of people who just don’t have anything else to yammer about.
To quote the great philosopher, Edith Ann, “And that’s the truth. Pfffft!”
