Why DID Apple Switch To Intel?

Intel builds good chips. But so does IBM. And AMD. The things that Steve mentioned when he made the annoucement that Apple would port to Intel chips next year were faster processors, lower power, and something called “performance per watt”.

IBM has already done a few of these things with their latest offerings. Besides this, IBM is coming out with new and advanced “core” technology, which makes you wonder if Steve made a mistake in switching from IBM.

Yeah, some people look at the situation and wonder what is going on. Current Intel offerings do not look that much better than IBM’s.

Others have looked hard at Intel and speculated that this company is going to have ‘something new.’ in the near future. Something so radical and so fast that it will leave competitors in the dust. Something that is not an incremental improvement at all, but a completely new way of computing.

If Steve Jobs was aware of this, it could explain the real reason why Apple switched to Intel.

– Consider a processor that is completely different from any X86.

– Consider a processor with as many as 16 cores.

– Consider one with fewer transistors, (only keeping the ones that do the work).

– Consider fewer but larger registers, at 128 x 64 bits.

– Consider a processor with ‘learnability.’

– Consider a processor with unheard of low power consumption.

If this any of speculation turns out to be true, then the reasons behind Apple’s switch become obvious.

First and formost if all this is true, is that there never will be a Mactinosh OS running on any X86.

That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.
