Something Nice

I had read Owen Rubin’s blog about how a person in front of him in the express checkout lane at his local Safeway had a ton of items, and was paying by check rather than cash as the lane stated. Owen was upset, rightly so, and confronted both the rude man, as well as the store manager. Of course, nothing good came from it.

So that was on my mind yesterday when, as I was starting to cook dinner, I realized I had not dethawed the steaks in the freezer. Opps! So it was a quick run to one of the local grocery stores to grab a couple fresh, ready to cool steaks to go with the potatoes, green beans, corn, and rolls.

When I first walked in, there was no one waiting in any checkout lane. Experience tells me that this means there will be huge lines once I grab what I need and get back up front. No biggie. And I was not disappointed.

So I get into the fast lane, but either the cashier was extremely slow, or the people in front of me had more than the ten items or less. However, the regular checkout lane right next to me was moving well, so I jumped behind the lady who had just finished pulling the last item from her cart onto the conveyor belt. Before the clerk started to ring up her items, however, she told him to “hold on, let him go first” nodding to me.

Here I am, with three small items, behind her, and she is graciously offering to let me go first since I only have a few items. I declined, telling her I was in no hurry, and we then struck up a conversation about Owens story, and how ironic it was that I had just had the exact opposite experience.

So it just goes to show you that not everyone is rude, and that there are indeed many, many good and decent folk out there willing to “let him go first” out of plain ‘ol goodness.

It made my day.
