I was never a fan of President Reagan or his policies. RIP, Ronnie. Ditto for the current Bush. But these two administrations are the first ones since Franklin Roosevelt to treat the office in a modern, activist way.
Reagan decided to support changing the American financial system. Out of chaos emerged prosperity (temporarily) that led to worthless Bill Clinton feeling responsible for the sudden rise in our nation’s monetary well-being.
I admired Clinton’s stated goals, but his inability to work with a Democratic majority Congress and his personal foibles sent him to the dumpster where he belongs.
Other “modern” Prezes (Truman? Ike?) from JFK through first Bush were actually using geezer old-school politics and methods to achieve their insipid or insidious goals. LBJ’s time stands out as the best and worst of both. (I’m not going to mention Nixon because I was out of the country during his administration.)
Reagan hated Commies, so he charmed them into closing up shop. Bushie has a God-given mandate, which will help him stay the course and smoke ’em out of their caves, whoever “they” are.
I have to hand it to RR and GWB, because they’re able to keep their teams in focus, on target, on mission. In spite of today’s adulation, Reagan was an overrated, tunnel-vision President. What will we be saying about Bushie a little while from now?
