Think about it. Peter Jackson’s Gollum character is so vivid and realistic, not because of the computer graphics animation so much as the employment of the excellent actor Andy Serkis, that, and a having a real dialog for Gollum to speak.
Otherwise, the Gollum CGI in the Lord of the Rings would have been just another George Lucas CGI production like Jar Jar Binks, a soulless creature with nothing to say, in a movie high on computer graphics but with little substance.
I guess if I am going to tie Peter Jackson’s CGI with Steve Jobs’ Macintosh, I need to tie George Lucas and his CGI with Bill Gates and Windows.
What really makes the difference between these two sets of creative men is their love of what they are doing.
Steve Jobs loves his creation. So does Peter Jackson. You can see it in the product that they create, and how what they create fulfills us so well.
George Lucas and Bill Gates are at least equally talented creators, but their products lack soul and ultimately fail to give us joy. You know what I am talking about.
The Macintosh is much more than excellent world-class computing technology and a world-class product design. It is a product created with love by a man who is able to instill that love in his product, to the benefit everyone who uses it.
Hopefully, this blog will turn into a discussion on the forum. Any takers?
