Open Letter to Bill Palmer

Bill:

As a writer for MyMac.com, I understand what it is like to get the juvenile flaming. As far as your prediction of the Mac mini flopping I do not agree with your assessment. You do make valid points about LCD offerings (I personally think having a basic 15″ and 17″ model available is a necessity at a truly competitive price at Apple Stores). The Mac mini, I believe will sell best at CompUSA and local dealers, where separate LCD monitors can be purchased at the same time. Customers will pick out the best feature/price match for them.

The keyboard and mouse should have been included and I have no doubt that by summer inclusion will be standard. My concern is the memory issue. Not being able to upgrade at home (well, at least until some website shows the way without Apple techs noticing the case has been opened) I believe is a design error.

In spite of these flaws I consider the Mac mini to be a solid “triple to the gap”. Those schools that still believe in the Mac platform will eat up the small footprint. being a school teacher/tech coordinator I can testify first hand the value that a space-saving and nearly silent device has on education. For families looking to replace their computer and enjoy working/playing with digital devices, plugging in their current monitor and leaving more desk space for homework is a definite plus.

I could go on and on. The fact is that the Mac mini is no Cube, the thousand dollar difference proves that alone. This product does fit in to the Apple lineup nicely. But the final decision on its success won’t be made until months after the initial rush of purchases. I, for one can’t wait to see what TV spots are created.

Sincerely,
Mark Marcantonio
