When I wrote my article about why people don’t switch to Macs, I was really surprised by the reaction. I have received a lot of mail (mostly pro) and I thank everyone for your input. Please be assured that I will continue to submit articles of this nature to this site. Also rest easy when I say that I will never take myself so serious, that I will believe half of what I write.
I would like to take a moment to say something serious though. One of the letters I received went into something I never thought of. Another reason why many people don’t use Macs. Here is the letter in it’s entirety.
Hello
You missed on important area on those not switching to Macs. People with disabilities are basically left out because most of the companies that design software (of good quality), do so only for windows. Universal Design is or should be a major consideration for future technology but ask anyone that is blind or has major mobility issues (hands included) and Mac’s come up relatively empty. By the way I have never owned a PC.
JAW’s (blind) for windows only.
Kurzweil (learning disabled and others)- windows is better
Voice Activated Dictation- Dragon Naturally Speaking. (don’t tell me about iListen, I have it, use it and it’s not very accurate and no comparison to Dragon).

Pete, you are correct in that these fine products are not available for the Mac. Apple does have many excellent ideas in place in OS/X for those with disabilities. Can any of our readers suggest ways for those with special needs can more readily use a Mac?
