I process payroll for our small manufacturing company. We pay twice a month, on the 5th and the 20th. Today when I arrived at work I gathered up everone and announced that there had been a terrible mix-up at the bank, so consequently instead of being paid next Monday as scheduled, everone would be paid the following Friday.
“I hope you’re prepared to take care of my late fees!” one said. “Can we get a draw to tide us over?” asked another. Shocked looks on the faces of a few others. I couldn’t believe no one got it! I decided to egg them on a little.
“Nothing we can do about it,” I said. “Bank error, they have somehow deleted our entire account. No draws, no late fee payments, if you want you can try to go after the bank for them. May as well just get back to work and make the best of it all.” As people slowly went back to their work stations, grumbling, I yelled “April Fool!”
The only problem with being the first with the April Fool joke is everyone trying to get back at you. Ah well, I’m prepared.
