Here we have a book that does a decent job at being all things to all people, with special emphasis on making sure readers understand reference material that will make them much better digital photographers and image printers. Everything is explained clearly, with very good text flow and structured content.

Long time photographers, scanner users, or Photoshop/Elements aficionados can benefit from some of the specific tips that occur in later chapters, and newcomers should read every chapter slowly and patiently. When taking the time and making an effort to grasp each concept and component in the digital photography chain, people who buy and immerse themselves in Mastering Digital Photography and Imaging will find the experience worthwhile.

This book will find its best home in a library or classroom setting. Strongest on fundamentals and imaging basics, the contents will help photography and software instructors focus on what’s essential for their students. If students and teachers learn as much as they can from this author, they will be prepared to advance into more detailed texts or workshops in which specific lesson material is covered.

Special mention goes to Chapter Eleven’s “Advanced Image Editing” using Photoshop’s Curves tool. Curves can be forbidding and unforgiving, so Peter Burian eases readers gently into using it, with instant success. Sections on getting best possible prints from digital images, and on working with film scanners, are particularly strong.

Well worth investigating, Mastering Digital Photography and Imaging deserves a MyMac.com rating of four when readers are willing and able to learn from this patient, thorough expert.
