I’ve forever heard the tale of the starv’in artists and all and noticed that the theme to such stories more than likely revolved around the artist suffer’in extreme deprivations for the sake of Art itself. Well this is true to a point; the art is always a cause of sufferin’ and consternation but the poor n starvin part comes mostly from the fact that art supplies are a damn sight expensive. Buy’in even a tube of paint’ll take three fourths of the four dollars ye just sold that sketch for on the corner…..
Usually materials are sold in grades, with Arteest grade bein’ finest and descending forthright to the scruffy qualities known as “student grade” supplies…but don’t let it fool you, they’s all gonna cost ye……hence still poor n starvin….
This is why I pickup sketchin pads at the Woolsworth for bout a buck twenty five, n this is why the paper in said pads tends to suck the ever good life from a thickly applied watercolor, as exhibited in the top sketch below, but it’s practical in a hobo framework, and twigs burnt from last night’s campfire are always just the right charcoal stubs for drawin.
Homemade material or not, it’s never easy to get a possum to pose for a portrait, so I kindly had to embellish a bit on the bottom drawing, but it worked out just the same…always seems to, for good or ill or neither at all…..
Well….I’m off on another sojourn for a bit. I’ll be head’in out to the mountains n yonder for a week or so n hope to be back soon with some more sketches……..
