Oh my freaking God. He did it. He really did it. After years of rumors with most Mac people saying that it will never happen, Steve Jobs confirmed that the Macintosh line of computers will switch to Intel processors starting next June. I’m completely flummoxed. I really don’t know what to say.
I do know this. Apple hardware sales are most likely going to tank for the next year. Why would anyone buy an IBM based Mac when everything will be obsolete within a year? I know I won’t. I just bought a 17″ G5 iMac for my kids and was considering a new Mac for myself at some point over the next few months. Not gonna happen now. Frankly, anyone that’s thinking about buying a new Mac would be foolish to do so.
The WWDC keynote isn’t over yet and all the details haven’t been said, but think about how much this changes things. In my opinion not for the better. Does this spell the end of Apple as a computer hardware company? How many applications will be lost from developers just throwing in the towel? After asking people to switch from the Mac classic OS (OS 7-9), how many will just give up and finally buy that copy of Windows?
I wish I could think of what to say to this, but I’m just in shock that a decision like this would be made even before the hardware is in place to replace PPC with X86. I wish I could be more upbeat and reassuring, but methinks there are dark times ahead.
