Apple Advertising?

If you like Macs you probably want to see Apple sell more of the things. You might hope that selling more Macs means more software at more locations or that economies of scale will kick in meaning lower prices (that last one is not going to happen) or you might just want your choice in computers validated by millions of others. Personally, as long as Apple keeps making Macs I’m happy.

In any event sooner or later Apple is going to have to advertise to get the Macs out the door. This is where I start to worry, just what kind of ad will Apple go with? The iPod ads are apparently working (color me confused on that one) but the Mac is a tougher sale. How do you convey the advantages of the Mac in a thirty-second spot? Me, I’ve got no idea… but I’m a little on the thick side.

Well I have one small idea. It’s not very good so stop reading right………now. I told you to stop reading, why won’t you listen to me? Really, this is going to be horrible, skip to the links, I COMMAND THEE!

Open:
Guy at work in cubicle sitting in front an XP machine. Mail dude comes by and drops off an envelope. Envelope opens to reveal a pink slip. Guy sighs.

Cut to:
Same guy getting out of car in a surburban driveway. Pull back to see a repo man (Hire Tim as executive consultant here) standing next to the guy.
REPO GUY: I’m here for the car.

Guy just hands over keys and starts walking to the house. Wife comes strolling by carrying kid.
Wife: I’m leaving you for the repo man and I’m taking Jacob with me.

Cut to guy sitting down in front of iMac G5. Guy Smiles.
Voice Over “Macintosh: It’s that Good”

Then the jokes could really get going, he wouldn’t have got fired if he used a real computer, he’d still be able to afford the car if he got a PC, if he would have used a PC he’d get more ads for penis enhancement and his wife wouldn’t have left him, blah blah, blah.. I told you to skip that part.

I hope they come up with some great ads, but I remain doubtful that they will.

What about a cc of Skippy!!!”) Whereas I could write that I’m going to begin producing baby seal fur iPod covers and people would just yawn. By the by, the new company is called Seal Skin iPod Covers. The tagline? Seal Your iPod in Luxury!

And that is all I’ve got. Be sure to check out Tim and Chad’s podcast they’re doing an excellent job. For example the show was starting to meander a bit and, whammo, they add a weekly topic to force some structure on the thing. I’ve been surprised just how fast those guys have picked up on the subtle stuff that makes a show really good. Sure, they’d like to kill NMN but I’m under contract.
