At 8:15 AM yesterday, Scaled Composites’ SpaceShipOne, designed by Burt Rutan, flew its first flight to 1.2 Mach and 68,000 feet over Mojave in a nine second burn. This is the seventh flight of the ship and the first powered flight. The craft then descended to the Mojave Airport in a twelve minute glide.
This, on the Centennial of the Wright Brother’s first powered human flight.
It is really something to be living here near Mojave and China Lake, and to be watching these historic contrails in the skies above. The air here is always clean and clear, and the desert winds are intoxicating, as well as the awesome eternal display of our galaxy spinning so clearly above us every night.
The only thing here on the ground that could possibly compete with any of this was the first showing of “The Return Of The King.” That was also awesome and memorable.
With all else going on in the world, it is a blessing to see the human spirit showing through such fine endeavors as these. In fact that spirit blazes brightly from time to time, doesn’t it?
May your own spirit within burn brightly and may you find success in your own endeavors this holiday season, as we celebrate the birth of another King, whose arrival out shown every other event in history. I suspect his story has been, and will be, that much more awesome and memorable than even that of the Ring.
Peace,
Roger Born
