I’ve finally been able to redo my office space at home, and besides getting a new, larger desk that permits me to spread things out and “look more efficient,” it also allowed me to finally arrange the desk/computer space so that I can function more smoothly and efficiently.

Well, one of the first things to change was that my G4 MDD had to come off of the two drawer file cabinet that it had been sitting on since that would no longer be part of the immediate area of the desk. The result was that the G4 wound up on the floor, sitting on the rug, gathering dust and not being very easy to move around at almost 50 pounds.

Marathon Computing to the rescue with MacSkate. Basically what we’re talking about here is a heavy-gauge aircraft-quality aluminum skateboard, if you will, with four full swiveling casters that permits you to move your G3 or G4 gracefully around rather then breaking your back lifting your Mac. MacSkate includes everything that you’ll need to make the necessary changes to your Mac: (1) MacSkate board, (4) screws and (1) Marathon Nifty Tool that permits you to remove the hex screws that hold the feet of your Mac in place. Marathon also provides you with another tool… the box that MacSkate ships in also serves as a work surface that permits you to flip your Mac upside down, remove the screws, take off the feet and replace them with the MacSkate.

Total time for me to position the box, position my G4, remove the feet, install MacSkate and hook it back up, ready for duty…. less then 5 minutes. What it also provided me was a Mac that is now easier to access, be it to add/remove a USB or FireWire cable, easy to move now to clean up beneath the G4 and it also makes it easy to access the interior of my Mac when I need to because the side access panel now drops below the level of the Mac permitting ease of access. Another plus is that the Mac is stable, won’t tip over and is easier to work with now.

Recommendation: If you haven’t gone to Marathon Computer’s website, do so and check out MacSkate. If you’re in the same boat that I was or you just want to improve the mobility of your G3 or G4, you won’t be sorry you got MacSkate. Excellent product!

My Mac Rating: 5 out of 5
