Great Mac Sites II

A few months ago, I wrote a column titled “Great Mac Sites” in which I poked fun at some of the Mac Websites out there, as well as giving some really good ones worth visiting. As I thought, most people read it and sent in nice letters, though a few took exception to what I wrote. Which is fine, I like a good debate as much as the next guy (Maybe even more!) So, that column being two months old, I thought I would take a new peek at the Mac web, and find out if there is anything worth your time. And boy was I surprised!

MacMinute.com
On May 9th, a brand new Mac website opened, to little or no fanfare. Called “MacMinute.com” it sports a very clean and easy to view layout. Very little advertising, nice white background, good-sized text, and a nice simple graphic. Hey, is anyone paying attention here? THIS is how I like to read the Mac news, in easy to read formats. Not clicking a thousand times to read the news on multiple sub-pages. Everything on one page, with clear links to other sites pertaining to the story or commentary.

MacMinute.com currently is only a news site, which is great. When sites try to be the be-all and end-all of all things Mac (or any other subject) they usually get muddied and loose direction. MacMinute.com is also created and run by none other than Stan Flack, the gentleman who also happened to create MacCentral before selling it to Mac Publishing LLC. Be sure to go and check out MacMinute.com, it may just change your Mac news browsing habits. It did mine.

GraphicPower.com
This is an entertaining site if you like to read commentary from a Mac user who doesn’t pull punches, tells it like he sees it, and is very talented. While not updated nearly often enough (last update as I write this is almost a month old) I still find myself stopping by the site at least once a week to see if site creator Scott McCarty has posted anything new.

The layout of GraphicPower.com is not bad at all, though a little busy at times for my taste. Just a tad too much to look at. I found this site when Scott himself emailed me his thoughts on the last “Great Mac Sites” column I wrote, but really came to most peoples attention with a column titled “Mac OS X Sucks”. Ouch, but like I said, they say it how they (he?) sees it.

MacEdition.com
I am not sure when or how I first came across this site? But I do know, I really enjoy stopping by a few times a week to see what is new. With regular columns focused on both news and rumors, the staff at MacEdition.com really seem to have their act together. Naked Mole Rat is a very similar column to the old Mac The Knife from the MacWeek heydays.

Taken from their own website, “MacEdition is committed to avoiding fan-boy “journalism”. While there is a certain market for rabid, unquestioning hype and support for Apple and all its decisions, MacEdition does not serve that market.”

How can you not like that? Go take a look, I think you will enjoy it. nice layout (Though the green lettered box asking for insider tips on the left side of the window has to go. Very annoying and distracting.)

I think that is enough for now. As you can see, unlike my last “Great Mac Sites” column, I did not “blast” anyone this time around. Don’t worry, I will again.
