Power2U AC/USB Wall Outlet
Manufacturer: Newer Technology
MSRP: $29.95 (Street price about $25)
Power2U Wall Outlet

Tired of having charging bricks blocking your power outlets? Most of us have a crowded spot in the kitchen or living room where we charge our iPhones and iPads. NewerTech has a solution, Power2U. This outlet replaces one of your power receptacles and provides two USB sockets in addition to the two standard USA 110V power outlets.

The power supplied by the USB outlets is technically 5.2V DC, 2000mA (10W). This is equivalent to the output of an Apple iPad power adapter so that the Power2U will charge iPads, iPods, or iPhones. To save power, the USB outlets are only powered when their covers are open and a cable is plugged in.

NuTouch Gloves
Company: Newer Technology
Price: $19.99

I live in the Northeast region of the United States, where every winter, cold is a way of life. Using your iPhone or other smartphone outside is not a pleasant experience: either you’re unable to manipulate the screen with a gloved hand, or you need to remove your gloves to use the phone. Neither option is a good choice.

Enter NuTouch Gloves by Newer Technology, the perfect marriage of convenience and warmth.

If you’re like me, you have a collection of old hard drives.

I’ve been using Firewire externals since forever, and $29 USB enclosures from compass since I got my G5 tower. Carbon Copy Cloner happily backs up my Documents folder (You DO keep your desktop clean, don’t you?) onto the hard drive named “USB” every morning at 4 a.m.

Every Saturday, I swap out the drives and put that week’s in the fire safe.

Newer Technology has been adding to its line of batteries and chargers for Apple PowerBooks. The Weeks division of MyMac.com labs has been flogging them to some time, to see if they have the juice, so to speak. I tested a 4800mAh (53.3 Watt-Hour) Aluminum PowerBook battery, along with a 65 watt-hour PowerBook battery charger.

If you are an iPod owner, you probably want to be able to listen to your iPod in the car. It is a perfect fit, really. Unfortunately, Apple does not have an easy, built-in solution. So the after market is afloat with add-ons which will allow you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, or at the least, transmit the audio to your cars radio. The later are called “FM Transmitter” because that is just what they do, they transmit the audio coming from your iPod to a radio signal that can be picked up and played over your cars radio.

PowerBook

The FedEx guy is gone down the driveway, and the Apple shipping box has been opened. You’ve got your shiny new 1 GHz Powerbook in your sweaty little hands.

So, how do you hold on to this 3 kilobuck little gem, and NOT let it slip out of out of your sweaty little hands? The top and bottom of the Powerbook G4 machines are smooth metal sheets, with little or no texturing to provide a good grip. The case has no odd shapes to provide a good handhold. You can’t just grab a 5.5 lb., $3000 computer with two fingers and head off to the races, as you are sure to drop it.
