The future, what do you mean? How can we be in the future?

For decades many of us have been in awe of the possibility of the future. Not that long ago the thought of carrying a single panel computer capable of presenting music, film, books, and games was nothing more than science fiction.

I live by the belief that if man can envisage it, people can create it.

Of course, there is the possibility of going too far, as is famously shown in Planet Of The Apes, circa 1968.

For now we can sit back and relax with a small and hopefully harmless portion of technology that seemingly has the effect of enhancing our lives.

It’s a week of MyMac.com Podcast tomfoolery as many of the shows switch hosts! The Pocket-Sized Podcast was fortunate enough (though that should be taken with a grain of salt) to get Gaz and Guy, the GMen from the MyMac.com Podcast to cover his duties. For some reason, Guy talked about Sharepoint a Microsoft program, while Gaz being more sensible (another grain of salt is required here) talked about his new iPhone 4S. Samsung’s Dutch patent trolling got a bit of a talking to and just why the EU thinks that carrying two cables for iOS devices is better than one baffles them both. Guy knows why most Android devices will never be updated and both GMen are a little perplexed by the change in the name of the Macworld Expo to iWorld.

Explorer Touch Mouse Limited Edition
Review

On October 25, 2011, in Macintosh, Review, by Neale Monks

Explorer Touch Mouse Limited Edition

Manufacturer: Microsoft
Price: $49.95 (including 2 x AA batteries)

The Microsoft Explorer Touch Mouse is a stylish, wireless mouse that offers the convenience of multiple programmable buttons alongside a scroll bar that works both vertically and horizontally. Previously available in glossy black, the limited edition version is burgundy in colour, making it stand out from usual black, beige, silver and white accessories Mac users will be used to.

But while the Explorer Touch Mouse certainly looks good, how does it stack against other high-end mice like those from Apple and Logitech? Does the new Microsoft BlueTrack technology really mean that this mouse will work effectively on a range of surfaces, not just mouse mats?

Yeah, we had some stuff to talk about, but it’s mostly just fun stuff since it’s kinda quiet lately. Gaz has a chat about the Liverpool Tweetup that went international with FaceTime to the US from an Italian/Spanish restaurant. It makes sense if you listen. Microsoft wants us to use Windows 8 with everything plus cheese and should you buy an iPad 2 with the the iPad 3 much closer than farther away? And let’s give a great big hand to a rather unusual iPhone case.

Word 2011 for Mac
Review

On May 20, 2011, in Features, Review, by Owen Rubin

Microsoft Word 2011 Macintosh (Version 14 if you are counting)
$149.99 for Home and Student version of Office
$279.99 for Business and IT Pros version of Office
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/

For as long as I have been using both versions of Word, one for Mac and one for Windows (yes, I use a Windows computer too), I have often wondered if they truly came from the same company. While they can read and write compatible files (mostly), their user interfaces have always been quite different, making it difficult to go from one version to the other and remember where all the commands are. Additionally, the two programs would leapfrog each other in features, almost as if they were competing with each other to see which could outdo the other with their latest features. And Word 2008 for the Mac seemed to completely miss the boat when it came to using some of the newer and cooler interface design elements of Mac OSX, almost as if the designers had never seen such a system. With Word 2011 for the Mac (Intel Macs only), most of that has changed.

Fans of iMacs or iMac Fans?
MyMac Podcast #350

This is a very anti-establishment show this time around as it seems Microsoft was probably listening last week as we criticized them and as a result, Skype was behaving very badly! They probably won’t be pleased with THIS show either as Guy goes through hell trying to get a product license for his LEGALLY purchased copy of Windows 7. No matter, lots of great stuff with an iChat chat, John Nemo’s Wife loves animals, and one of Gaz’s hard drive enclosures takes a dirt nap. Guy is very angry (SO angry!) with LodSys, the latest patent troll that takes a novel approach at getting money from Apple buy suing iOS developers and frankly we aren’t very pleased with Apple either as doing something as simple as a hard drive swap spins your fans to the max.

Dan Wood from Karelia Software comes on with the GMen and they have a great chat about Karelia’s SandVox version 2 which was just released. Dan generously offers a 20% discount for the whole month of May for MyMac Podcast listeners! Just type in “MyMac” in the adjustment section on the payment page. Tim asks for gas at a battery powered car maker. Skype has a Mac-only Malware Exploit AND gets bought by Microsoft. Seems like a match made in heaven. Lastly, we make fun of Steve Balmer…because we can.

Don is in BIG trouble with the GMen! He promised to be on but let his daughter’s 18th Birthday get in the way! BAD Don! We have a great show regardless with a good discussion about Lawyers, Guns, and Money but without the guns as it relates to recent events concerning Apple and Google. That’s followed up with a good laugh (from Guy anyway) about Microsoft taking over big in the mobile market at Apple’s expense.

The (Mac) App Store
Finally!

On January 9, 2011, in Features, by Tim Robertson

I hate when people remind me that something I predicted came true. Alright, I’m lying. I love it when people tell me something I predicted has come to pass! Like when wrote that the iPod would be a failure once Sony really got behind the whole digital music / MP3 thing! Oh, wait…

Anyway, a few years ago, even before the actual launch of the iTunes App Store, I was spouting on the MyMac Podcast that there should be something similar for Macintosh application. And here were are, January 2011, and we finally have it! The App Store!

Welcome, MyMac readers, to Fenestration – back after a hiatus from the podcast, and now in a written form to reflect our rebrand back to MyMac Magazine. This column is my guide to using your Mac in a world filled with Windows machines. I will cover issues of information exchange with Windows users, using Windows infrastructure with your Mac, and how to run Windows or Windows-compatible software on your Mac.

While traveling back from the US to the UK recently, I was sat waiting in an airport lounge, and I flipped open my MacBook Pro in search of the local WiFi service. What I found was a single service entitled “Free Public Wi-Fi”. Unfortunately, this was not the cut-price gateway to Internet connectivity you might think – and it is all Microsoft’s fault.
