Guy and Gaz finally get back together after the Macworld Expo and go over all the major events as seen through the eyes of Guy (No guarantees about accuracy). Gaz in withdrawal does about a billion other podcasts. There was a lot of listener feedback which they only kinda half-answer (they’ll get back to it, promise!). A longer show because Guy doesn’t when to stop TALKING!

It’s the last day of the Macworld/ iWorld Expo and I feel like I owe you website readers an apology. I haven’t written much this trip and while I have a pretty good reason for it, it still doesn’t feel right. This was the “Take as little as possible to the Expo with just iOS devices to do everything I needed to” experiment.

iOS at the Macworld Expo

On January 24, 2012, in Apps, Features, iOS, iPad, iPhone, by Guy Serle

As said previously, I’m going all iOS this year. That means all audio, blogging, and video editing must be done strictly with the hardware and software only available through Apple’s iOS ecosystem and nothing else.

I live in the Northeast region of the United States, where every winter, cold is a way of life. Neither option is a good choice.

Enter NuTouch Gloves by Newer Technology, the perfect marriage of convenience and warmth.

WordPress on an iPad

On January 7, 2012, in Features, iOS, iPad, iPhone, by Guy Serle

As I’ve been moaning about for the last year on the MyMac.com Podcast, I’m not taking a Mac laptop to the Macworld Expo this year. I’ve decided to do everything on my 1st generation iPad to include audio, video, and blogging. All edited with a trusty iOS device. Oh I’ll have my iPhone 4S too to actually record the audio and video, but everything else will be done with my iPad.

Thule Crossover Backpack
Review

On January 3, 2012, in Back Pack, Review, by Vicki Stokes

Thule Crossover Backpack
Thule
Price: $129.95

The Thule Crossover Backpack is elegantly constructed with lots of storage and a crush proof compartment. The backpack weighs 2.75 pounds which may be the only drawback for daily use. The $129.95 price is indicative of the quality of construction which is consistent with Thule products.

Thule is marketing this backpack for Apple’s 17 inch MacBook Pro and iOS devices. There is an elevated laptop compartment perfectly designed for the MacBook Pro, a sleeve for the iPad, and plush lined pockets for iPod or mobile phone storage. The lockable crush proof SafeZone compartment can be used to store fragile gear like sunglasses. The main compartment is roomy enough for books and bulky items. There is a  Shove-it Pocket that provides external storage that is deep enough for a newspaper and Thule claims could accommodate a jacket. In my opinion, a windbreaker may fit but a jacket or sweater would be a tight fit. Other features of the backpack include water resistant nylon fabric with padded shoulder straps and grab handle, a bottom zippered pocket for additional storage of small accessories, a front storage compartment for easy access items, and a side external pocket that can stretch to fit a water bottle.

As our portable technology increases in performance and functionality we are forever looking for a power source. This trend is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future so we need to take additional measures to ensure we get a complete working day out of our devices.

Common sense power saving techniques are featured in this article. Some require too much compromise in functionality to be truly useful. The following guide aims to address all viable power saving techniques for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 5.

External cases such as the Mophie Juice Pack or Mobius Solar iPhone Rechargeable Battery Case assist with on-the-run power requirements, albeit with additional size, weight, and cost.

The following information is not collated by level of importance or effectiveness. In many cases a combination of these techniques added together can significantly increase your available battery power.

The Mysteries of iOS 5 Wi-Fi Syncing

On October 18, 2011, in Apple, iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Macintosh, Opinion, by Scott Willsey

One of the many promises of iOS 5 was that it would lead us out of the wired wilderness and into the modern world of over the air updates, syncing, and backups. Anyone with iPhones and iPads knows the pain of constantly having to tether their devices to their computer just to update things like podcasts, and to make sure apps and settings are backed up. Now those things can be done over Wi-Fi, provided a few conditions are met.

Two of those elements, syncing and backups, do or can involve iTunes running on a Mac or PC. Unfortunately, how this works isn’t immediately clear. I noticed another person in my Twitter stream who was equally confused about the backup portion of the equation, specifically as to when backups would occur when syncing an iDevice over Wi-Fi. I’d also seen some comments that Wi-Fi sync would only happen when the device was connected to power, which I personally knew wasn’t true. So I decided to do some testing to figure out exactly what the requirements for Wi-Fi syncing and backups were.

Oh, and by the time you read this or hear this pocast, it will almost be time for unspecified iPhone news! YAY for rumors that can’t be proven but have a logical consistency!

Yeah, we had some stuff to talk about, but it’s mostly just fun stuff since it’s kinda quiet lately. Gaz has a chat about the Liverpool Tweetup that went international with FaceTime to the US from an Italian/Spanish restaurant. It makes sense if you listen. Microsoft wants us to use Windows 8 with everything plus cheese and should you buy an iPad 2 with the the iPad 3 much closer than farther away? And let’s give a great big hand to a rather unusual iPhone case.

SuperTooth HD
Review

On September 6, 2011, in Audio, iPhone, Navigation, Review, Wireless, by Mike Breed

SuperTooth HD Review
Company: SuperTooth
Price: $129.00 USD

As a commuter with a fairly long drive to work each day, I often find myself in situations where I need to use my iPhone while driving. Aside from the fact that using a cell phone while driving can be dangerous, it is also illegal to do so in New York State. Utilizing a Bluetooth handset and going hands-free is the only safe and legal option for motorists needing to use their cellular devices in my area of the country.

I’m not a big fan of in-ear Bluetooth devices. I find them uncomfortable and distracting, and that’s not a situation I want myself in while driving. The SuperTooth HD speaker phone seems to fix that dilemma with its visor-mounted handsfree system.
