Cosmos Story2

As an amateur astronomer and a volunteer with Project ASTRO, I regularly use the concept of scale to help teach astronomy and engage our students in visualizing and grasping the immensity of our universe. I typically use examples scaled in the dimension of physical length, area, and volume to assist in illustrating the distance and sizes of planets, our solar system and neighboring stars and galaxies. The Cosmos Story application approaches this concept of the size of our universe in slightly different way by using the dimension of time as related to the speed of light. That is, light travels 186,000 miles per second or 300,000 kilometers per second. Working in this dimension, the distance between the Earth and our Moon is a little more than a second and the distance from the Earth to our Sun is a little more than eight minutes.

Millie Was Here, Book 2: Millie & The Lost Key
Available On The iOS App Store
App Developer: Megapops
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Licence: US$3.99 – Compatible with iPad – Requires iOS 3.2 or later

Millie is back looking for the key that will access a treasure trove of limitless bacon.

As you may have gathered by the title, this app is an interactive book which makes up part two of a yet to be completed series. Children will get to know Millie and her superpowers better as they traverse sky, sea, and land all the time being wary of Pirates, Piranhas, and a devilish cat who is also on a adventure for the beloved bacon.

As with Book 1 the format and general procession of the book remains intact. This allows a continuity that children and parents alike will welcome. Book 1, Meet Millie, introduced the adorable little dog as a short story sample of what to expect. Book 2, Millie And The Lost Key, builds on that by telling the continuation of Millie’s incredible story across 22 lovely pages with exceptional interaction and storytelling. The story will throughly engross any child’s imagination. Whilst there are underlying links between Book 1 and Book 2 there is no exact link in the story line that requires parents to pick them up in chronological order.

Chuck & Friends is a delightful children’s app. Being a father of two, both under the age of five, it is exciting to watch their faces light up as you present to them a new app on the iPad. That is exactly what happened when they were introduced to Chuck and his friends.

Despite Chuck and Friends being a popular children’s television show, both my children had not previously known of the franchise. It was a great test bed to see how they would adopt to a new set of characters into their already over populated world of cartoons. My son absolutely adored the story and the excitement that the app brought to the table whilst my daughter proclaimed “it’s a boys game”. That was until she saw how much fun her brother was having.

The main story is delivered over 70 stunning pages. The graphics are bright and vibrant enough for any child to enjoy.

The story is split up, with the occasional video clip to further enhance the experience. A series of mini games allow children to locate letters to make the name of certain characters. Children will also be able to play hidden item matching games throughout the story to build or repair items.
