At the beginning of last November, I purchased a new 13-inch MacBook Pro to replace my aged 2007 MacBook. I had decided to hold off on purchasing AppleCare, saved up, and this week figured that since I was going to be in the Mall where the Apple Store is located on Saturday, thought it would be the right time to make the purchase before the year was up. I wanted to purchase AppleCare with cash rather than a credit card, so when the store opened at 10 am, I was there. As I walked in with everyone else, staff members were at the entrance asking everyone what they were there for. When the guy at the door asked me, I told him I was there to purchase AppleCare for my MacBook Pro. He asked me when had I purchased it and I told him last November, November 4th, to be exact. A month or so ago, I noticed that my iPhone 3G was not updating when I made changes to either my Address Book or iCal on my one year old MacBook, so I made an appointment at my local Tucson Apple Store. Things have changed at the perpetually busy Genius Bar; iPhone techs now meet their clients at the front of the store, which is always very crowded with customers. These days, there are often more people in the Apple Store than in the rest of the stores combined in the upscale shopping plaza where Apple is located. Sad for those others, but I wish Apple would move into larger premises.

AppleCares, and so should you!

One of the joys of buying consumer electronics is having to decide whether or not to purchase a warranty for your shiny new toy. Most warranties are fairly limited, expensive, and generally worth thinking about carefully before deciding to purchase. But not so with AppleCare. AppleCare is a no brainer. If you’re considering buying an Apple product, and you’re not planning on getting AppleCare, then Lucy, you have some ‘splainin to do.

Apple’s web site shows AppleCare options for Mac and Apple display, iPod and Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad. What might not be obvious is that if you purchase AppleCare for your Mac, it will also cover things other than the Mac and an external Apple display, such as a Time Capsule or Airport Extreme. I’m not sure how Apple handles it if there’s any question about the other device being purchased at a different date than the Mac, but I have firsthand experience that they will honor it.
