My Mac Magazine #29, Sept. '97
A Few Words...

***At Press Time
As this issue was all finished and all but out the door (so to speak), word came in that Apple has purchased Power Computing's "core assets." What this means for the Macintosh community will not be known for a while, although I personally cannot see anything good in the long term with this.

We would like to hear from you. We want to share your thoughts on this matter with our readership. What do you think of all this? Remember, many people at Apple Computer do read this magazine, so voice your opinion here.

Intro and Changes
In this issue, both Russ and I write about the changes in the Macintosh world of computing. Being a monthly magazine, it's hard to write about the most current, up-to-date information available. But we do try, and for that reason you may read something that becomes incorrect or obsolete by the time you read it here. But hey, we're a magazine, not a newspaper or news Web site.

There are also some new things in store for the readers and staff of My Mac Magazine. As many of you know, My Mac will soon offer some neat "My Mac Stuff" like tee-shirts and coffee mugs. We hope that you will consider purchasing them, as it will help ensure our continued existence. (All the proceeds will go to the staff, not me. And all Deluxe Edition subscribers will receive some "stuff" for free.) When is this coming? Soon, I hope. We have hit a few snags, but hope to have them cleared up shortly.

Another change, coming very soon, will be more reviews. I don't mean simply more shareware reviews, although these we plan to continue as a main feature, as we have on staff a first class reviewer in Fenton "Manavesh" Jones. Rather, I mean reviews of new hardware and software from all the major vendors.

Now, before you start to think we will become a MacSense Reviews or Macworld, take heart. We will not use some test software to determine the speed of a new Mac nor will we measure how long a 3D program takes to render an image. You can find that information from many other sources, all of which are listed on our great links page. (Thanks to Adam and Brian K.!) Nope, you will get the same type of reviews that made My Mac what it is today. Reviews from an everyday users standpoint. Users, of course, just like you.

I Thought I saw a CEO
Apple continues the hunt for a CEO to come on board and take over command. Icelandic poets, CEOs, COOs and CFOs from other companies are just some of the people allegedly being considered for the position. Most "experts" say that Apple needs to have the new CEO in place within 90 days so that changes can really start. I'll keep you updated if I hear any good rumors or sightings.

TBWA Chiat/Day
In a move to boost their sagging advertising problems (to put it nicely), Apple has hired TBWA Chiat/Day as their advertising agency. No, Apple does not create their own ads, as many of you seem to think. They hire another company to do that. So who was in charge of the advertising up to now? BBDO West. But as they move out, TBWA Chiat/Day moves in. And this, let us hope, signals a new era in Macintosh advertising.

Who is TBWA Chiat/Day? They are the same folks who created the first 1984 Macintosh ad, as well as the infamous "Lemmings" ad the next year. (Which I have FINALLY found in QuickTime movie format! If you want a copy, e-mail me.) The 1984 ad has become the yardstick against which all other Apple advertising is measured, so now that the company that created that ad is back in the driver's seat, I think we may be seeing the last days of the non-Apple advertising problem. I hope...

Rumors Abound...
regarding Apple and the clone issue. Is Apple going to buy out the clone makers licenses? Is Apple going to buy one of the clone makers? Is one of the clone makers going to make a large investment in Apple? Are Apple and a couple of the clone makers going to join forces so that Apple can have direct access to marketing and still keep their dealer networks? Only time will tell if any of these are true or just figments of somebody's imagination. Russ

DVD vs. DVD
Just when things were looking great, DVD is on the hot seat. (DVD disks are CD-sized disks that were touted as holding 2.6 Gbytes of data. See My Mac #27, June 1997 for Brian Koponen's great article on DVD.) Just when the home players were on the verge of hitting the shelves and our Macs, there is now in-fighting between all the competing manufacturers. Sony, Hewlett-Packard, and Philips are now announcing that they will develop 3.0 Gigabyte drives. And some other companies, like NEC, are already saying they will create 5.2 Gigabyte machines.

What does all this mean? Compatibility problems, time delays for shipping products and no mass rush on the part of content providers to ship disks when they are not yet sure which will become the standard. Ah, and just when something seemed to be going so well for once...
