Saving The Mac?
For those readers looking forward to reading the new Victor Wong column, I am sorry to say Victor took this month off. Where is he? Off saving the Macintosh, of course! But fear not! Victor will return next month!

Where have all the rumor/insider sites gone?
I'm just like the rest of you when it comes to finding out what's going on with Apple and the Mac. I'm constantly searching for new and updated information about Apple, its products, and what may be forthcoming in pricing, models or staff changes that could impact upon Mac users. Since Apple is very tightlipped about everything, a good source of potential information was the "rumor" and "insider" sites that claimed to have the latest info on what was going on with Apple and things pertaining to the Mac. You read what they wrote and took most of it with a grain of salt, but at least it was information. Surprising enough, a lot of the information turned out to be true and it was available a lot sooner then through "normal" sources.
But now these sites are disappearing or shutting down with little or no warning. Rumors abound as to what happened to each site. It's like a faucet being turned off; information sources drying up and little or no info on Apple can be found. Maybe it's now time for Apple to "Think Different" in regards to how it disseminates information to the media and to the people that use and support Apple. No, I'm not asking for spies to penetrate the inner sanctum of Cupertino and divulge the innermost secrets, but it would be nice to hear news from Apple sources in a more realistic time frame rather then after the fact or not at all.

UMAX and the clone market
Now the latest information from UMAX is that they plan to reduce their "commitment" to the Mac market and increase their Windows market interest. This is all due to the "uncertainty" of the status of Apple and its continued existence. This comes after their doing a land-office business in the clone market after the demise of Power Computing and the announcement of the "end of licensing."

Apple and Direct Marketing
Well, October 1 has come and gone, and still we haven't seen a direct marketing of Apple products as was being forecast in early September. I know that things have been hectic at Apple, but I would have thought that immediate action in improving sales and market share, particularly after buying out Power Computing and its assets, would have resulted in changes in how one could go about buying a Mac.
