Email: publisher@mymac.com or editor@mymac.com PDF Me I wrote you back a ways and told you about your My Mac. I've now read all the issues that were available and now I can say that your e-zine is not only one of the best, in my opinion, it is the best. I have all eleven that I could get on floppies and I made up a log that tells me what issue holds the stuff such as tech tips, reviews, etc. that I really want to keep track of. Keep up the good work. Now after all that I have a question. Sometimes when I download, I get the manuals or read me files in PDF form and when I try to read them I get a message telling me I can't read them until I install the fonts Adobe Sans MM and Adobe Serif MM. Does anybody there know where or how I can get them? Thanks for any help.
ED Schuler Thanks for the very kind words, Ed! We appreciate them, and your letter. As for PDF documents, you will need to install Adobe Acrobat. The latest version is 3.0. Be prepared, however, for along download. Acrobat is over 3MB! However, if you read MacAddict, you will most likely find it on one of their CD-ROMs. The fonts (Sans MM and Serif MM) come with Acrobat. The Rangers Leave... Dear Tim, Great job on April's issue, issue 24 . Either you're my age and your mind goes on vacation OFTEN or you're playing mind games. Good, you got my attention! One thing I'm sure you're aware of, as of today we lost a great little zine, the Infinite Loop Rangers have hung it up. Hope someday another Apple Sauce starts up. Hang in there Tim, even tho I don't email often I want you and your "Rangers" to know you're appreciated. Best Regards,
Dale Newell
Hey, Dale! One of our readers from WAY back! Great to hear from you once again. For those who do not know what he means when he mentioned the Infinite Loop Rangers, they were responsible for the news letter "AppleSauce." It appears that AppleSauce is now gone for good. Too bad, really. I loved it. It was very informative and a great read. Danny Novo, who also created About This Particular Mac, was in charge before turning it over to others.
With luck, Danny will create something else for us very soon. He's a very talented individual. System 8 Preview After seeing a demo tonight by Rich Ford of Apple (not of MacWeek), I was equally impressed by all the new features mentioned in the two part article.... But glaringly omitted in your article was the personal Web sharing features that will be part of System 8... where as you can open folders in NETSCAPE to your remote computer .... as well as publish directly from your home/office computer... These were truly awesome... wait till folks hear about this!!!
Richard Web Sharing, indeed a big part of Mac OS 8, is all what Richard says and more. It will be one of those things PC users will once again hate us for:-) However, fear not! Both Adam and I are not done with our preview of the next Mac OS software. Check back with us next month when we look at the first Beta version. And yes, there have been some changes from the Alpha version. Please! Please, if you can, ask Apple to make "Sticky Menus" optional. Thankyou.
Jerry Wilson I will ask them, hold on.... Okay, Apple said it is now optional... I only wish it was that easy to get Apple to listen to us. More Demos! What do you think? I told Apple that they should go to malls and demonstrate the Mac. But they went to the stores. So I went to the demo, and found out that they (the stores) were restricted to what they can show, and the salesmen kept the people away from the Macs! Boy was I mad! You see, I told Apple that they need to go to the malls with 1 P.C. with MMX and 1 Mac 9600, and let the people try the Mac themselves. But I guess that is too much to ask of them. Let me know what you think. Or should I e-mail them again?
Give 'em hell, Nick! I agree with you. Apple needs to start doing way more"In your face" stuff, exactly as you suggested. As Mac users, Apple is pretty much assured we (or at least a large majority of us) will come back to buy another Mac, rather than a PC, in the future. But it's the new computer buyer Apple needs to go after.
My question, though, is a simple one. Why does it have to be Apple going out to win all these customers? Motorola is making Mac OS compatibles now. Why can't they do a little advertising? Hey, they advertise their cellular telephones and beepers all over the airwaves, why not their computers? For that matter, what is Power Computing or Umax doing? Everyone (myself included) always harps on Apple for not advertising. Are they the only Macintosh OS computer manufacturer with an advertising budget? Perhaps it's time for us to put the spotlight on some of the other vendors. What do YOU think? Drop me a line and let me know. My Battle Against Crashes, Part II A previous message described at some length how I had successfully incorporated Ram Doubler, Speed Doubler, Ram Charger and 60+ other extensions/control panels into my clock-accelerated, cache-added Performa 6112. How everything coexisted pleasantly, and crashes were few and far between. Those words were true. Those days were sweet. But I couldn't leave well enough alone. (Who can?) I added an Apple AV card (to have millions of colors at 832 instead of only 256 colors). I added a second monitor. (Luxury!) Fractal Design Expression joined my stable. (It doesn't like Ram Doubler.) Speed Doubler upgraded to 2. Ram Doubler upgraded to 2.01. PageMaker became 6.5. QX-Tools became 2. (The new QX-Bars won't coexist with the driver for my Epson Stylus Color printer.) Those are some of the "improvements" I permitted. Today my system is as uncertain as the government of Russia. RD, SD, RC and others are off, suspected of participating in the frequent crashes I was having. With this minimalist arrangement, it's been pretty stable, but too soon to really know. (The consolation for this aggravation is that running my main monitor off the AV card has made the system decidedly faster.) In short, anyone who might have read the previous message and felt a pang of envy can take comfort that I'm back in the trenches with everyone else, troubleshooting at the enemy.
Chuck Miller Good luck, Chuck!
