My Mac Magazine #38, June '98
A Few Words

Premiering this Month in My Mac
This month's issue marks the debut of a cool new feature in My Mac Magazine. While I'm usually not too hip on reprinting another website's content, I've found a site that's just too good not to read twice. After contacting the authors, I'm thrilled that starting with this issue My Mac will be reprinting some of the best items of the last month from "As the Apple Turns". Like any good soap opera, this daily reporting of all things Macintosh can become a habit, which it has for me ever since Susan Howerter opened my eyes to it.

I know you'll enjoy reading the "Best of AtAT" here in My Mac, and after doing so, you'll want to bookmark their website at http://www.infoxczar.com/atat/

1984 Online
A new digital magazine (much like My Mac) has been created, and after only two issues, I have a feeling they will be around for a while. Titled "1984 Apple Online Magazine", the publication hails from the UK and sports some very good writers and artwork. You can check it out yourself at http://www.1984-online.com.

More Magazines?
If you haven't heard yet, MacWeek will soon end its run, at least as far as the print version of the magazine goes. I'm still not sure how I feel about this, especially now that MacUser is gone, having 'merged' into Macworld.

According to their publishers, there simply aren't enough advertising dollars to go around. Not long ago, I might not have believed that, but I must admit that Macworld is getting mighty thin lately. In any case, our choices are narrowing, because there soon will be only three print media Mac magazines left: Macworld, MacHome, and MacAddict. Are these three publications enough to sate your Mac fever every month? Do you want more? Perhaps another one will present itself soon... and you always have us!

A Rash of Viruses
While the Macintosh platform has long enjoyed a virtual drought as far as viruses are concerned, the past few months have seen a surge in the number of Word macros and now we have 3 versions of the Hong Kong worm (A, B and C) to deal with. While there is no reason to panic, it would behoove all Mac users to make sure their antivirus programs are brought completely up-to-date. Here's one lesson we can learn from the Wintel people: Where destructive viruses are concerned, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Macs and the Media
After enduring several years of negative, often incorrect reporting, it now feels like a breath of spring air is moving through the land. Enthusiasm abounds now when it comes to reporting about the Mac or Apple, and it has even transferred over to the stock market. Even Mac users are being looked at in a good light. I can hardly wait until the fall and the iMacs hit the street to hear what's going to be said then.

My Mac Welcomes...
Jason Kim, 15, to the My Mac staff as one of our new writers. Jason says that he's had a Mac since he was about 1, (the Mac 512k). From there he graduated to a IIcx, and now has a Power Computing Power 120. The young Californian likes to program and currently has a snowboarding game in the works. His major interests so far are in MkLinux/XWindows on Mac, C programming, HyperCard development, and beta software (which he has loads of). You can check out Jason's first articles in this issue, reviews of Kineticon and FinderPop.

How are we doing?
Every few months, we like to take the time to ask our readers how we're doing here at My Mac Magazine. Your thoughts, comments, praise or concerns are what we need to hear to ensure that My Mac continues to provide the very best in columns, articles, reviews, and special features. Let us know what you're thinking.

Free PR
I don't usually inform or tell people where to buy stuff here in My Mac, but I recently purchased memory from Mohawk Memory. I could not believe how low their prices were! It was in talks with them that I convinced them to sponsor My Mac Magazine, not only for the advertising dollars it would mean for us, but so that more people will shop with them and save a ton of money on memory. Great prices!

Web Update!
Our web-master, Adam, has been hard at work on the My Mac web site these last few months. With the release of this issue, you may want to stop by the web site and check out some new features, such as our Site of the Month page, more online exclusive content (Such as Startup Screens for free downloading, and My Mac Special editions issue's) as well as a updated layout that makes it much more easier to navigate. Let's be honest: too many web sites make it hard to locate the information you want quickly. And as Mac users, we are used to finding what we want, when we want it, fast and easily. With our web site, we try to do just that. So if you have not visited our Web site lately, you may want to have a look!
