PowerBooksI love your My Mac ezine/webzine. I wish you would have more articles for PowerBook lovers/owners and their particular needs (different peripherals, travel tips, buying tips, wish lists, etc.). I have been disappointed with Apple lately when it comes to the PowerBook line. I have an Xmas wishlist for Apple to fulfill as my ultimate PowerBook for the year 1997. Please feel free to put this in your zine in the NEW "PowerBook" section (hint, hint) :) My ultimate PowerBook:
1. PowerPC: 604e chip, 220 mhz
b. Adobe Pagemill 2.0 c. ClarisWorks d. Netscape or Explorer e. Eudora Pro or similar email software f. Ircle (latest version, 'cause I love to chat!) g. Other ('cause I want my options open) 11. Can anyone think of anything else? Add it here!! It drives me nuts that Apple isn't keeping up with the latest technology and can only come out with the 1400 series PowerBook line after a disastrous 5300 series. I know Apple can do better than PC notebooks. I would much rather use an Apple than any Windoze PC! C'mon Apple, are ya listening? A concerned PowerBook addict, who currently owns a PowerBook Duo 280c,
Elaine Wow, that's a heck of a list, Elaine! Lets hope someone at Apple (and I know they are from the letters I receive - Hi Tom!) will read your letter and take it under advisement. With Steve Job's back, I think anything is possible.
Andree RevisitedI had to laugh when I saw my last e-mail in MyMac #20. My sense of "Drat!" about no longer e-mailing MyMac is no more. I now make it a point to command-click on that URL, launch Netscape, and grab the issues as they come. The value and enjoyment I receive from the e-zine are worth the extra effort. Keep up the good work, and thank you. Andree Leighton The voice keeps whispering to me "If you print it, they will come." So decided to print this letter from Andree, too!
My Fault!Like your magazine; but noticed the change in the DocMaker version from 4.6.1 to 4.7 has resulted in the Contents Icon (whatever it is called) at the lower left portion of the window; not working. I have a 17" monitor, and miss not being able to click on that lower left section to bring up the Contents window and set it aside from the DocMaker window for easier access. Don't know whose fault this is, so, I'll start with you. Why does'nt it work?
Richard As Richard discovered on his own, I forgot to add a Table Of Contents page to issue #20. All I can say is "Sorry! PLEASE don't hate me!"
Why Does Apple Do This?I was recently reading the December issue of My Mac and as usual I am impressed, so keep up the good work. I noticed that the most wanted gift for December turned out to be a performa 6400/200. Well, I was one of the people that splurged when I saw the sexy new machine and bought one. I have been more than satisfied with my new Mac; however, one thing strikes me as strange, why did Apple release such a great machine on the market without any front plate bezel parts in stock for the installation of removable media drives. What I am saying is that I wanted to install a Jaz drive in my Mac, just as it says you can in the users manual, when I found that Apple does not have any bezel plates. I live in Austin, Tx and have quite a few friends down at technical support, so I inquired about my problem. I was quite surprised when I visited the tech support center one day and my friend told me that there was no part in Apple stock for this bezel. I could not believe my ears. My friend pointed me out to a company called "Casa Blanca Works." I wrote to Casa Blanca and they told me that the bezel I spoke of was in the works in there company. I am still waiting for a bezel I can buy. By the way, Iomega couldn't help me either. Why does Apple do things like this? With as popular as Jaz and Zip drives are you would think that Apple would anticipate this demand. Help me, Tim Roberts, you're my only hope (star wars allusion). !-)
Thanks, I would think that, as Apple sells more of the 6400 series of Performas, and the popularity of the Jazz and Zip drives grows, someone will make the besel plate. Of course, if Casa Blanca Works Inc. says they are working on one, rest assured you will be able to buy one soon.
Epson Stylus ReviewI just read your review on the Epson Stylus Color 500 and I must say my experience has been the opposite of yours. I started off with the HP DeskWriter 680C as it came equipped with AppleTalk but returned it due to the poor color printing quality. I then bought a Stylus and since it is a serial printer I used Port Juggler and hooked it and my LaserWriter IINT to my PowerMac 8100/80. The results were great. I have not experienced the re-start problems nor do I find the cleaning time to be anything obvious. The truth is I find the price very good and the color print quality using HP's Premium Inkjet paper (a mid level grade of paper) to be good in 360dpi mode and great in 720 mode. The Stylus is at least twice as fast as the DW 680C. Maurice Polanw
Secret About BoxI'd like to respond to the letter by Andrew who complains he can't find the secret about box in his System 7.5.1 Mac. I think there is a simple explanation: System 7.5.1 doesn't have a secret about box! My Performa came with System 7.5.1 as well and I didn't see the box either. Only after I upgraded to 7.5.3 (and subsequently 7.5.5) did I find out what these iguana stories were all about. System 7.5 (on a Mac at my work) had a secret about box as well, no iguana stuff but a simple breakout game, where the ball bounces against the names of the teammembers. So as to System 7.5.1 I guess the people at Apple just forgot to include the secret about box, they're human too, mind you.
Keep 'em secret,
Ego StrokingYour site is great. Simple, informative and a great amount of high detail concerning the Mac OS. Thank you for your efforts and please do not get frames. I hate frames or Java. Thank you for your time. Cory Clawson We hate Frames, too! In fact, I almost changed the name of the My Mac Web site to the "Anti-Frames Home Page," but My Mac Magazine just sounded better.
Swedish GobbledygookDo you remember the article in #19 with the Swedish comment? (Bits & Pieces, November 1996 ) Just in case you never got the translation, here it is.
> Apple har lagt upp en sajt med sin framtidsstrategi. Adressen ar snitsig: > theplan.apple.com. Plannen i sin helhet kan laddas ner i Acrobat-fotmat. Apple has setup a site with its strategy for the future. The address is cool: theplan.apple.com. The plan, in its entirety can be downloaded in Acrobat format. My son-in-law is Swedish (Sorry I took so long) Sheri Maurer AH-HA! So that's what that meant! Thanks, Sheri! Next time Grant needs a translation, I will send him your way!
Want to complain about Apple? Want to bash Microsoft? Like a review or disagree? Write in! Only takes a few minutes. And remember, don't just send me your letters. Write to the writers as well. If you enjoy their writing, drop them a note. It's the least you can do :-)
