What YOU wantTim Robertson wrote: >I want it. More than all the "Open" and "Cyber" stuff together. CyberDog is available >right now, but how many of you use it? And I would also bet >more are using TCP/IP to connect to the Internet than are using Open Transport. I don't know how many people are using CyberDog or Open Transport, but I think they are a significant number. I do prefer Netscape's Web browser over CyberDog's, but I don't use Netscape a lot since having all of my Internet stuff integrated is very much worthwhile than a cool browser. With Netscape Navigator, it is a pain to get bookmarks organized, and although you have mail and news together with the browser (that supports limited ftp), you still don't have Telnet. CyberDog offers a very, very good integration of Internet services. You have a very impressive ftp client (that works very much like the Finder does), good news, mail, and terminal options. But most of all, you have Notebooks where you can store and organize your email addresses and URLs (ftp, nntp, http, telnet). This, I think, is the clearest advantage, together with the best graphic interface I've seen in any Internet client. Open Transport? I also use it (1.1.2 now) along with OT/PPP (1.0) These two together have make the connection to my ISP easier. And faster. Switching from FreePPP 2.5 to OT/PPP 1.0 has also made a significant decrease in download times. >Which brings me back to the Appearance Manager. That's what people want, but Apple >won't give it to us. They just keep us waiting. If Apple were smart, they would give >7.6 away, or at least sell it at a very low price, and then sell 7.7 with the Appearance >Manager for $100. I agree with you on this one. >It's what you want. It's what I want. But what do we get? CyberDog. Yippie! What do I want? I want CyberDog 2.0 (went alpha this week) I want Netscape Navigator for OpenDoc to replace CyberDog's browser, but I want to keep all the other CyberDog stuff. I love it! I do want faster and more reliable networking, which I think we have in Open Transport. And yes, I do want the Appearance Manager, but I think I can wait for it. I would rather have a Mac OS fully PPC native to exploit the speed of our PPC processors. Multi-threading, memory protection and the like are what I want first. And soon.
So, there's my opinion.

Uploading My MacI just downloaded My Mac and I wonder if I may upload it into the Mac Files of my local BBS here in Montreal. I don't see, in the "Legal" section of your publication, any objections to do so, but I don't see any invitation either. So, just to make sure, would you be kind enough to let me know if it is a possibility? Thank You Denis C. Montreal Quebec. Feel free to upload My Mac Magazine anywhere you wish, providing no changes are made to that issue, of course! My Mac may also be included on CD-ROMs, though we would like to have a copy of the CD-ROM in exchange. Also, if you know of any really good Mac BBSs, please let us know! We will be putting a second list together soon.
QuickBooks ProThanks for the review of Quickbooks Pro. I have been considering such a package for my tire supply business. I purchased Big Business and began the setup process by spending countless hours entering all of my inventory items. The first disappointment was that there is no way to sort the inventory file during the setup process other than to print the entire list. Then as soon as you close the file (to save your work to disk) the file un-sorts! The real disappointment came when I discovered that the file had become corrupted in some way and was duplicating some items and deleting others. I don't know if this is a common problem, but it sure makes me afraid to proceed further with this program by starting all over. I then began shopping around for another package. MYOB has won all kinds of awards and is highly rated by many magazines, but the AOL forum on MYOB would scare anyone away. There are literally hundreds of postings by desperate users. So my question is, do users of Quickbooks also have these horrible file corruption problems? It sure seems strange to me that no magazine review I've seen so far has ever mentioned these problems. Do you know of an online forum for users of Quickbooks?
Best regards,
Roger,
Is MYOB better than QB? In some ways, though I have read about some problems with corrupt files. (That's what daily backups are for;-) ) With QB, I have never had a file go bad myself, though, of course that is not to say it does not happen.
For inventory tracking, which I do not need with My Mac Productions, I have solved that problem with FileMaker Pro 3.0. I create databases for local businesses, and have found that I can create a FileMaker Pro database to do JUST what people need and want. Most "Big Business" type of programs tend to fall a little short in this category. If you already have FileMaker Pro, your best bet is to create what you want there, or have someone do it. (Relational databases are a little tricky for new users, but will cut your work load in half in no time flat.)
Bottom line, if you can try out QuickBooks first before buying, give it a shot. If you find that MYOB or Big Business works better for you, stay with that. I really can't say, as I don't know what you need. (Though I have an idea, as I was a manager of an auto parts store for two years, which sold tires, did repairs, and sold parts.) But for what I use QuickBooks for in my consulting business, it works great. Not perfect, but what program is?
Let me know how it goes, and what you end up using! And for those out there using these business programs, feel free to send in your experiences with them. We are here to help other Mac users make the most out of their computer time, and if you know a way to better that, especially in business, we would very much like to know.
On AOL 3.0I just wanted to write a quick message to notify you of a feature of AOL 3.0. In a response to a letter in issue #20, you said that you hate the buddy list feature because everyone now knows when you're online, and you got a new screen name so you could be left alone. You could have saved yourself a lot of bother if you had just gone to keyword: buddy. Once there, click on the preferences button. The screen that is brought up allows you to block people from putting you on their buddy lists, or if you don't want to type in all those people, another option is just to type in the ones you do want allowed on your buddy list. Using this, you won't have a bunch of people IM'ing you as soon as you sign on. (I know the feeling.) Hope I was of help. -Nigel Thanks for the AOL help! With my rotten luck of even signing on as of late, this is not really a major concern to me right now. But at times, the system does work great. And it is at these times that I get IM's (Instant Messages) up the wazoo. Ah well, the life of a publisher, I suppose! Besides, I really like all the attention sometimes! :-)
What's That Font?Wonderful 'zine {web site ain't too bad, either}. But, the reason for my writing you, is that the last two issues {# 19 & 20} has a neat font at the bottom of most of the pages, with the web site URL. Question is: what is that font and where can I get it? Don't suppose, by any stretch of the imagination, that there is somewhere to download it? Thanx for any light that you might shed on this. And keep up the good work. Dana J. Hodak
The font in question (seen at the very bottom of this page with the Web address) is called "DavesHand." I found it on the "EPSON Color Pak" CD-ROM that came with my Epson Stylist Pro printer. (Not to be confused with the EPSON Stylist 500 I gave a review of a few issue's back)
The CD-ROM also came with Adobe Home Publisher, Adobe Photo Deluxe, and some fonts. I am not sure if the font's are shareware, freeware, or EPSON owned.
You call this tech support? When I need help, I go to mac-wizards@cc.gatech.edu. Whoever is able to help, or has ideas, will answer my question. I do the same for them if I am able to help. Works great!
"Free" OSesGood article. You may be interested in my site (below) where I skewer them, and the industry in general, mercelessly. :)

I actually did run across your web site when I was researching the FreeOS stuff. (I think I found it via Ric Fords "MacInTouch" home page, which I find absolutely fantastic! http://www.macintouch.com)
At first, I did not realize it was a joke page! I did figure it out soon enough, of course. You did a great job, and I hope everyone can spare a few moments to go get a chuckle or two from it.
Web SiteThis is a fantastic site!!!! I haven't seen a mac site this well organized in a long time. Keep up the good work.

Thanks! In our attempt to bring My Mac Magazine to more readers, and create a web site we can be proud of, it was decided to make the web site as easy to use as your Mac.
If some of you have yet to check out our Web site (www.mymac.com) please do so. We have a nice software library, some past reviews, one of the best organized links pages you will find, and back issues of My Mac. Take a look! And be sure to drop our Web master, Adam, a note when you are there!
World Domination!I've just discovered your excellent magazine. Keep up the good work. After reading Pete Miners account of the Macintosh Think Tank's view on the year 2007, and being in a bit of strange mood myself, I redesigned the mac start-up screen. Using ResEdit it now appears when my Mac boots. I attached a copy of it - feel free to use the graphic. If anyone else would like a copy of it, it can be downloaded from my web site: http://www.telusplanet.net/public/alanger. Again, keep up the good work...long live the Mac. Andrew Langer Thanks, Andrew, for the very cool startup screen! I hope everyone will check out your homepage and download it. If you want to see what it looks like, check out a 50% scaled version in this months Miner Thoughts.
Want to complain about Apple? Want to bash Microsoft? Like a review or disagree? Write in! It only takes a few minutes. And remember, don't just send me your letters. Write to the writers as well. If you enjoy their writing, drop them a note. It's the least you can do :-) Remember, My Mac Magazine is a FREE magazine, so we "live" off the response we receive from you, the reader.
