MyMac.com Spotlight: David Dudok de Wit

Who are the people behind the technology that we love so much? We know the products, the websites, the online personalities but we want to learn more!

Every week here at MyMac.com, we will spotlight a company, developer or person that supports Apple users by creating solutions or entertainment for the Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV and other platforms we all use and love by asking them to answer seven questions.

This week, we turn our attention to David Dudok de Wit, Co-Foudner of TripMode

1 – How did you get your start in technology?

I started off toying with a (trans)portable 386 laptop when I was 11, playing games and configuring DOS to be able to run them. Even then, the possibilities offered by personal computers fascinated me. When the Internet came along, I got hooked: I became more and more interested in technology. It became a hobby  (e.g. putting together videos, websites, iPhone apps, more recently the Continuity Activation Tool) and eventually a day job.

2 – What is your favorite computer of all time?

My 13″ MacBook Pro, hands down. To me, it’s the perfect combination of power, portability, and well thought out design from both a hardware and software perspective. I bring it everywhere with me, and use it for example everyday when I commute by train to work.

3 – Tell us about your latest product

TripMode: it’s the world’s first mobile data saver for laptops, which blocks all unwanted applications (updates, cloud backups, etc.) from eating your precious data in your back. It’s made for people who travel with their laptops and need connectivity anywhere, but not at any price. Sold at $7.99 on tripmode.ch for both Mac and Windows.

4 – What was your first job?

Fixing computers in the neighbourhood to earn pocket money! First real full time job: Management & Technology Consultant in a regional consulting firm.

5 – What advice would you give to younger people just getting into technology?

Listen to what the end user has to say, ask questions, understand his/her problems and needs. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking about features and solutions first. It’s very tempting, but you risk building something that no one really needs, wasting your energy, time and money.

6 – Who was your inspiration?

The usual suspects at Apple: Steve Jobs and Jony Ive. Also: Tim Ferriss and Eric Ries, two authors that inspired me with their radically different approach to building successful startups, compared to what I learned in university.

7 – Where can people follow you online, and what is your website?
