To paraphrase an old adage: One cannot be too rich, too thin, or have too much screen real estate. This is especially true for me when working in multiple applications with many windows and tool palettes. The benefits of working with a second monitor became apparent as soon as the NEC 24” Widescreen Monitor came to life when connected to my MacBook Pro.

As a photographer, the quality of the image on the monitor is as important as the additional pixels. This MultiSync Monitor doesn’t disappoint. After running the monitor calibration process on the NEC monitor I find that the color rendition is very close to the internal MacBook Pro monitor. I am confident that I can produce photos that will please my clients when I use this Widescreen Monitor. The sharpness and contrast are very similar.

This 24 inch monitor features a backlit LED display with a native resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels and a contrast ratio of 1000:1. The 178° viewing angle means that the image is easily visible to multiple viewers not sitting exactly perpendicular to the screen. This NEC MultiSync will easily pivot from landscape to portrait orientation giving the user extra versatility.

The NEC E245WMi is ready for your computer with VGA, DVI, and Display Port connections. A Display Port cable is included in the package. This fact excited me until I realized that there is a difference between Display Port and the Mini Display Port included on my MacBook Pro. A quick dip into my big bag of cords, cables, and connectors yielded a combination that worked for me. When I connected the NEC MultiSync to two computers at once, everything worked as expected. The input button on the monitor bezel switched the display from one to the other without complaint or problem.

An audio input port is available next to the video ports. The specification sheet promises two speakers and one watt of power. This presumes that the audio feed will be pre-amplified. The audio out port on my MacBook Pro presumes that amplified speakers will be at the other end of the cable. For quality sound, good amplified speakers are recommended. Don’t bother with the internal speakers on this monitor.

The included desktop stand features a vertical adjustment range of 4 inches. The stand is removable and can be replaced by an included plate that allows use with the VESA* standard mounting system.

Total vertical adjustment range is about 4 inches.
Total vertical adjustment range is about 4 inches.

The NEC E245WMi is priced at the upper end of the spectrum for this size monitor. But it delivers performance at the upper end of the quality spectrum. If you are in the market for a quality monitor in this size range, then this offering belongs on your short list.
