MyMac.com Spotlight: John Seward from PubBlog

Who are the people behind the technology that we love so much? We know the products, the websites, the online personalities but we want to learn more!

Every week here at MyMac.com, we will spotlight a company, developer or person that supports Apple users by creating solutions or entertainment for the Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV and other platforms we all use and love by asking them to answer seven questions.

This week, we turn our attention to John Seward from PubBlog

1 – How did you get your start in technology?

I took a programmer’s aptitude test at the Iowa State Highway Commission in 1967 and scored 100%, got a job there as a programmer trainee, and taught myself IBM 360 Basic Assembler Language.

2 – What is your favorite computer of all time?

It’s gotta be a Mac running OS X. For a long time all I wanted was a UNIX machine with a Mac interface, the best of both worlds.

3 – Tell us about your latest product

Our main product is MailSteward (MailSteward.com), which archives your email in a relational database and provides extensive functionality for searching, exporting, analyzing, and generally managing your email.

4 – What was your first job?

Well, I had a paper route when I was 11, and I had a number of jobs, washing dishes, working in a Heinz ketchup factory, working in a prefab housing factory, janitor on the night shift a a newspaper pressroom. But my first tech job was as a computer operator at the Iowa State Highway Commission.

5 – What advice would you give to younger people just getting into technology?

Learn Swift. And be prepared to continuously be learning new things forever.

6 – Who was your inspiration?

I’ve never really had a mentor, but I would say that the man who has most inspired me is Bob Dylan, for his unwavering insistence on wearing his own kind of hat.

7 – Where can people follow you online, and what is your website?

The main website is pubblog.com. My twitter handle is pubblog. Blog at Nick’s Tech Blog.
