G-DRIVE mobile — portable FireWire/USB drive for MacBook Pro
Price: $150 for 500 GB
I’m using both these portable Mac accessories today and every day, and I’ve been using them all summer while traveling through the American Southwest. G-Technology’s G-DRIVE mobile is my new favorite portable external bus powered FireWire/USB backup drive. FastMac’s new TruePower battery is a reliable replacement or additional battery for original MacBook Pro users with removable laptop batteries.
G-DRIVE mobile is designed to match the black and silver styling of Apple’s recent MacBook Pro laptop computers.

Beauty is more than skin deep. In MyMac’s prior reviews of G-Tech’s companion G-DRIVE mini and mobile USB external drives, we have mentioned the company’s dedication to styling and performance. This latest release completes the family. G-DRIVE mobile arrives formatted for Time Machine backups.
The drive is lightweight, cool to operate, efficient to use, and guaranteed for three years. Drive speed is 5400 rpm, with an 8MB cache. FireWire and USB cables are provided, and no power supply is required to run this drive from any recent Macintosh.
I have written previously about quality versus value. MyMac continues to recommend G-Technology products, because we use them ourselves. No protective case is provided with G-DRIVE mobile, so we award it a strong 9 out of 10 MyMac rating.
TruePower — rechargeable MacBook Pro battery
FastMac’s latest TruePower battery keeps my 15″ MacBook Pro powered up for hours and hours while on the road or on the sofa. Design and manufacturing standards are excellent. If you are planning to keep your older MacBook Pro for any length of time and you are still relying on your depleted original Apple battery, get smart and get a TruePower second or third battery. They are less expensive and more powerful than Apple’s batteries. Perfect score: MyMac Review Rating is 10 out of 10.
