A long show this week as the guys look at all the latest iMacs, iLife 08, and iWork 08. The big news is the changes to iMovie, and the complete lack of third party support for iMovie plug-ins. As such, we chat with the biggest name in iMovie plug-ins, Bruce Gee of GeeThree.com. Also, who is David Cowan, and what did he say to get Tim so mad at him? Listen to the show to find out.

Road hazards

On August 5, 2007, in Original Blog, by Rich Lefko

I hear many people complaining about cell phone using drivers.
I just got back from a 1,500 mile roadtrip and saw people doing all kinds of dangerous things on the road, but I didn’t have to go out on the nation’s highways to find them.
Today I had a women in front of me brushing her hair out while talking on the phone! How many hands does she have? Yesterday I passed a guy doing 75 mph (yes, I was doing 80 mph) who was flossing his teeth! When I lived in CA a fellow passed me on the freeway doing 80 mph, steering the car with his knees, while he had a drumstick in each hand, he was “playing” the visor!
Listening to talk radio one day, the fellow asked people to call him and tell him what you are doing in the car besides driving. One woman called to say she balances her checkbook while driving.

The fact is, people have always been doing stupid things in cars, but with the advent of the cell phone there seems to be more of them.

What have you seen people doing on the roadways (please keep it clean, this is a family site) and do you think it’s worse out there?

Planbook
Software Review

On August 3, 2007, in Macintosh, Review, by Donny Yankellow

Planbook
Company: Hellmansoft

Price: $30
http://www.hellmansoft.com/

A teacher and a plan book go together like peanut butter and jelly. The problem with a traditional plan book is that it is one more thing to carry around or lose. I’ve been searching for a digital plan book for years, and I think I finally found the right one. Planbook by Hellmansoft is a plan book for your Mac (it works on Windows, too) that is easy to use and affordable. The developer, Jeff Hellman, has done a great job in making this a fully useable digital plan book. I guess being a teacher himself had a lot to with that.

First, Planbook has the look of a tradition paper handbook. The interface is great, and could not be any easier to understand.

Review

On August 2, 2007, in Review, Video, by Claus Wolf

turbo.264
Company: Elgato Systems GmbH

Price: €99.95
http://www.elgato.com

My very first review for MyMac.com was for Elgato EyeTV for DTT and today I have another Elgato product for review. It is a product, which you could call a companion product for the EyeTV, but it serves just as much as a companion for your iPod with Video, AppleTV or PSP.

The biggest problem with converting video for use on your portable (or not so portable) device is the sheer time it takes to complete the task. In EyeTV you can schedule a recording and tell it to convert right away in a format suitable for your purposes. I love that feature, but my Mac Mini (1.42GHz G4, 512MB RAM) isn’t quite up to the task. Converting a movie I have just recorded can easily take all night. The toll on system performance is so high that you most certainly do not wish to be working at the same time.

i.Sound MAX iPod and MP3 Speaker System
Review

On August 2, 2007, in Dock, Review, Speakers, by John Nemerovski

i.Sound MAX iPod and MP3 One-Piece Speaker with Wireless Remote Control
i.Sound by dreamGEAR

Price: $85-100 (depending upon where purchased)
http://www.isound.net

MAX from i.Sound is a great one-piece iPod and MP3 speaker. I’ve been using it every day and night for the past three months, and I recommend it. MAX is not audiophile quality, but for general listening you get a versatile, compact, attractive, portable, high-quality speaker at a modest price. If you need premium sound reproduction, here is a product to consider in the same price range, but it lacks MAX’s remote and abundant feature set.

At first glance, before blast off, the diminutive, well-rounded MAX is more peculiar than impressive. It is as long as my outstretched hand, and as wide and deep as a clamshell cellphone case facade when closed. The speaker has a power button, a “surround” button, and one each volume up and down buttons on its contoured upper surface, in addition to a generic iPod dock connector. The company provides iPod inserts for all recent models.

I took a bunch of pictures of my extended family last May, when we celebrated everyone’s birthdays together because we only convene once each year. Gifts galore were given and received, with more fun and less fanfare than during a certain well-worn holiday season that shows up every December.

We’ll use photos of my brother, mother, doggie, and brother-in-law during this exercise in improving family pictures taken indoors. The images have been cropped and gently enhanced. I used Adobe Photoshop Elements 2′s Levels adjustments to perform all edits, because Elements is a consumer application that many cross-platform readers can relate to. All changes could have been done using iPhoto, Aperture, or any recent version of Adobe Photoshop (Elements or professional), so YOU TOO can have great family photos.

DLO Action Jacket for iPod Nano, 2nd generation
Review

On August 1, 2007, in iPod Nano, Review, by Russ Walkowich

DLO Action Jacket for iPod Nano, 2nd generation
Company: Digital Lifestyle Outfitters

Price: $29.99 MSRP
http://www.dlo.com

For well over two years now, I’ve been using a DLO Action Jacket for my iPod Shuffle, primarily when I’m running or working out. When I upgraded to an iPod Nano, 2nd generation, it was only logical that I also upgrade to DLO’s Action Jacket for iPod Nano, 2nd generation.

Running 2-plus miles, usually five times a week, can put the iPod under a lot of stress, primarily from weather and high moisture, as in sweat. I’ve learned that the DLO Action Jacket does a great job of preventing harsh conditions from impacting upon the iPod.
