With all the new Apple announcements today, a certain Senator once again will have to be VERY concerned about how full his pipes are. A friend asked me what his name was, but I had to admit that I wasn’t sure. My wife keeps up on these things so I quickly told him, “I don’t know, Alaska.” Ba-da BUMP PSSSSssssshhhh.
OK, all joking aside (yes that was a joke), the Stevenote was very interesting and had me excited because I am in FULL reality distortion field mode while it’s going on. Makes the crash afterwards very difficult to manage, though I must admit that it does bring back vague half remembered memories from rock concerts in the 1970s. Let’s start with the good, the bad, and the ugly from each category.

New Apple Gear
Apple’s Show Time! event kicked off today with Steve Jobs unveiling both updates to the iPod and iPod Nano, a new version of iTunes (version 7), Movies to buy in the iTMS, and the iTV, the long-rumored set-top box to bring your digital content into the living room.
While the iTV is not the final name of the devise, it does look like a thinner Mac Mini, and sports a built-in power supply (good news, no huge power brick like on the XBOX 360!), USB, Enternet, 802.11 (G, H, X??) Optical Audio and RCA out, HDMI ports, and works with the Apple Remote.

Have you ever gotten a call from a friend or relative who needed help with their Mac and it was the kind of help that required your seeing the computer? Instead of going over to that person’s house, you could just fix it from your computer, with the right software.
There is commercial software available that will let you control another Mac from your computer, but there are also a few free options out there. I’m going to write about one of the free options, which is also one of the easiest options.
First, before downloading any software, each computer needs at least 10.2 installed. Both computers also need a high speed internet connection. You will also need someone on both computers. A phone, iChat conversation, or some other way to communicate is also needed.

Marware Protection Pack
Company: Marware
Price: $19.95
http://www.marware.com
Frankly, when I received the Marware Protection Pack for review I wasn’t sure what to make of it, or if it would even prove useful, but before I spill all the beans on this review, I suppose I should describe what it is.
The Marware Protection Pack consists of a PVC leather cushioned hand rest and a soft microfiber keyboard cover and retails for around 20 bucks. Marware offers the Protection Pack for the iBook, Powerbook, MacBook (in both black and white), and MacBook Pro.

Whoa!
That’s the word on the new iMacs announced this week. The upgraded venerable all-in-one Macintosh has gotten bigger, faster and brighter! Now featuring the Intel Core 2 Duo processors the new iMac line has new entries both on the low and high end. Adding a $999 17- inch model on the low end and a spectacular 24-inch model on the high end, Apple has a powerful line of iMacs ready for the end of the year. I want one of those 24-inch models to replace the TV in my bedroom. I can’t wait to use the Apple remote to watch movies, look at my photos or control music. With the HD resolution it will work great with my HD satellite system, too. We’ll go into some more detail about these new machines later in this issue of Kibbles & Bytes. Apple also gave the Mac mini a speed bump this week. There’s an Apple media event on September 12th that is the talk of the community with a lot of predictions. Suffice it to say that the media invite said ”It’s Showtime!”.

The Printshop For Mac Version 2
The Software MacKiev Company
Price: $59.95 Single User; $89.95 Family Pack
www.mackiev.com
If you use iDVD and its themes for home or professional use, you can’t afford not to have The Printshop For Mac Version 2 software. I’ve been using this latest version since it was introduced at the Mac World conference last January for all my DVD labels and cover designs. While I could also do DVD cover layouts in InDesign or Apple’s Pages, The Printshop offers a less time consuming integration with iPhoto, iDVD, and iTunes that you simply won’t find in the larger, more expensive design programs.

About a year ago I was listening to the MyMac.com Podcast and Tim Robertson made a request for a writer to do a tutorial type of column for MyMac.com. I thought I could do that, so I sent in an email. As few phone calls later, I wrote my first article for MyMac.com. A few weeks after that Macspiration was born. Fast forward forty-nine articles, and here I am writing number fifty! Who knew?
For Macspiration fifty I’ve decided to make a list of ten assorted tips to help the beginner Mac User to the more advanced user. So here we go.

I’ve been reviewing each new edition of Jim Heid’s The Macintosh iLife series since it was first published in 2003. The first edition in 2004 was great, the ’05 edition was even better. MyMac.com publisher Tim Robertson even covered original book in the series, The Macintosh Digital Hub.

CrossOver Mac

What’s happening on September 13th? All I can tell you is that the word is WOOF.
Speaking of woofs, Grace and I headed up to Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom and St. Johnsbury to visit Vermont’s most famous dog artist, Stephen Huneck and his wife Gwynn. You probably have seen Stephen’s work often featuring his black lab, Sally. We have several of his woodcuts in our office and Stephen and I share one very important passion – dogs. It’s about a 2-hour drive to Dog Mountain, the home of Stephen’s Dog Chapel and Gallery. I’d been there once before about 5 years ago for the dedication of the Dog Chapel. As we headed up route 2 with Fantail and Hammerhead, it wasn’t hard to find the road to Stephen’s place. He had created a very large statue of a woman walking her dogs to mark the road.
