This is Dawn here! Since this is my very last chance to write the entire Kibbles & Bytes newsletter, I offered to write so that Don and Ed can take one last week off. Holly has a few articles that have been saved up so she’ll get the week off, too, though she’ll have an article or two to contribute. Don did decide to write a bit of a closing so this is will wrap up the newsletter.

We give away both Microsoft Office 2004, and the Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop for Mac this week. Also, Tim puts to rest the falsehood of the iPod and iTunes monopoly. Guy joins us with the Dashboard Minute, Nemo pops by with a review of the new pink Razr, and we introduce new regular contributor Robert Hazelrigg!

In Macspiration #37 I wrote about tips for using iTunes. This week it’s iPhoto’s turn. Here’s five iPhoto quick tips for you.
1. Export
In iPhoto 5, Apple moved the Export command to the Share menu. Why? I don’t know, but you would think they would keep it there for iPhoto 6. If you thought that, you would be wrong. For some reason, they have moved it back to the File menu. So if you need to Export files from iPhoto stop looking in the Share menu, and go to the File menu.

This week’s headline: ”iPod better than beer with college students”! It was close, but iPods beat out beer for the most “in” thing on campus by a 73-71% margin. Surely this is a sign of the apocalypse. Beer is beating out the iPod here in Vermont, too, as the monsoon continues. We had one day of sunshine in the last two weeks and it looks like this weekend is going to be a washout as well. Maybe we are paying for the mild winter we had this year. It just doesn’t seem fair that our three and a half days of summer are rainy.

I never liked iChat much and I don’t think this is going to change any time soon. I am very happy with what Skype does for me both in my personal and professional live.
Skype for Windows supports video calls, the Mac OS X version unfortunately doesn’t and that’s why I ended up playing around with iChat Friday evening and today.
A good friend of mine bought a MacBook with built-in iSight and really wanted to give it all a try. I was just all too happy to help. The biggest hurdle was to get the connection established, because iChat requires a bunch of ports to be open, which my router’s firewall just blocks by default. If you want to know more, I recommend you read Apple Support Article 93208.

A pleasant young woman greeted me and everyone who entered our Apple retail store in Tucson. Her job was to make us feel welcome, and to guard the MacBooks and iPods on the first pair of display tables. Rumors are this store was robbed recently, and the professional thieves only grabbed from those two tables, which were beyond the range of any video surveillance. No apparent robbers were evident at 7:30 last night.
She and I discussed the new MacBooks at length, while I was typing, clicking, and examining every aspect of one. I had done a lot of reading in preparation, so I wasn’t expecting many surprises. I found a few.

Like the sun rises every morning, personal computers get cheaper every day. More families can afford to have more of them.
More computers means more data: more digital photos, more Quicken account data, more digital music downloads, more homework, more business presentations. And all of them are critical to the owners.
Of course, every soccer Mom, overworked Dad, and high school Sam and Sally back up their data every night, right?

We had great weather for the trip to Maine and we caught a Memorial Day parade on the way home in Rochester, New Hampshire. It’s been rainy ever since, with some big thunderstorms in the afternoons. We managed to get all the screens installed but the garden is behind schedule because of the wet ground. It looks like it will be a good year for apples, though (the kind that grow on trees!). I’ve been trying to grow apples for as long as I have lived in Warren and have yet to have a good crop. My micro-climate is not conducive to apple growing, but the mild spring seems to have helped this year as my trees were covered with blossoms. Maybe 30 years of pruning and fertilizing will finally pay off.

iJet with Bottom Dock
Company: ABT

I like taking my iPod with me on long trips in my car. My car has a mini-jack for my iPod which is located inside the elbow rest console of the car. It is very inconvenient to have to open the console to skip a track on my iPod, to control the volume, or pause it (for some reason). This is where an iPod wireless remote comes in handy, and the iJet with Bottom Dock is one worth considering.
