I know, more iPod cases? Yup. In my opinion, the more iPod case reviews the better. There are so many iPod cases on the market, that when I bought mine I depended on the reviews I found to help me make a decision. Hopefully, this article can help you out.

iPhoto Books
Company: Apple Computer
http://www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/features/books.html
A few weeks ago I decided that it was time to try out iPhoto Books. I once tried my luck with a windows application, but found the results at the time to be so simplistic, that I scrapped my work in progress, went out to WH Smith and bought a proper photo album, had the pictures printed and ended up putting it all together myself.

A true Mac user would never be caught buying a Hallmark greeting card when he or she has TextEdit, AppleWorks, Pages or some other graphic layout program installed on his or her Mac.
If you have Pages installed, you can whip a out nice Mother’s Day letter that will be more meaningful and personal than all the store bought cards you’ve purchased in the past.
What you will need: Pages (AppleWorks or TextEdit can also be used), your iPhoto photos, and loving words.

Generally, I try to keep the downloads in the Download Drawer centered around a theme. This time I decided to just list a few great programs that, basically, have nothing in common, except that they are made for the Mac. As usual, all of these programs are free.
1. Delocalizer, by Mike Bombich

If you find yourself in need of more hard drive space, try running Delocalizer. Delocalizer will remove any foreign language files off your computer. If you need a certain language, you can leave it unchecked in the Delocalizer window. I have freed up over 1GB of hard drive space with this fantastic program. My friend got back 1.7GB of space.

Amateur and professional photographers use Photoshop mainly to enhance their photographs. Anyone using this powerful program knows what magic it can do when simple features like color enhancement, increased saturation, cropping, and unsharp masking are applied to their images.
It’s hard to tell how most people use Photoshop, but I would say that many of its layer blending modes are rarely used non-professionals unless you’re lucky to have a deep creative streak within you that makes you wince at simple straight forward images that most photographers produce.

The snapping turtle that spends the winter buried in the mud by the bocce field slowly made its way toward the river yesterday, drawing a crowd for the second year in a row. Joyce looked up the date and it was May 4th last year, too, when the turtle made the journey down to the Mad River. Spring must truly be here! Things are looking green and the poplar trees that are the last to lose their leaves in the fall are the first to have leaves in the spring.

No doubt, either version of Adobe’s Photoshop offers the best tools for photo enhancements, but Apple’s iPhoto image Adjustment tool provides a quick, down and dirty, method for enhancing your photos. I rarely print out or publish a photo to the web without at least using one aspect of this Adjustment tool.

If you’re a heavy computer and internet user, having a Google Gmail account is one of the best deals in town. There are few other email accounts that offer you 2,000MB (or 2 gigs) of FREE disk storage space and a bunch of smart filing features to manage your emails and other files.
I’ve had my Gmail account for about two years now, and I mainly use it as a secondary email account for site registrations and as one more back up device for photo and business files. Since Gmail accounts can also be downloaded as an RSS feeds, I’ve been tempted to make make more use of mine. As a web-based email account, it offers pretty much all the features that Apple’s Mail offers, including smart folders, rules for managing and filtering incoming and outgoing e-mail, signatures, address book, and search features—by the the post popular and powerful search engines on the planet.

PhotoBank

Even though I’m not a full-time photographer, I often do photo-shoots in which I take several hundred pictures in one setting. And on more than one occasion, the two 512MB CompactFlash cards I use for my camera have maxed out with a little over 300 photos on each of them. In a pinch, I’ve used my iPod to store photos in order to free up my memory cards for more shooting. But now that I’m beginning to also shoot in RAW format with my 8-megapixel camera, each of my RAW photos weighs in at more or less than 8 MB—over twice the size of the fine quality 3 MB photos that I typically shoot. And so being able to off-load picture files onto a portable storage device is essential to getting the job done.

I had been contemplating the merits of buying a FM Transmitter for my iPod in the US and bringing it over to Germany in the past. I then remembered how much trouble my parents got into, when my Mom bought my brother and me a set of walky-talkies in Spain. Those cheap walky-talkies of course weren’t licensed for use in Germany and my Mom sure didn’t know about these things. Still “ignorance of the law is not an excuse”, thus the trouble, and there were many tears from a then six year old.
Trying to avoid the indignity of seeing a grown man cry, I decided to wait until FM Transmitters would become legal here. And finally they are! Press releases at the beginning and middle of March made it to known that FM Transmitters could now be legally obtained in Europe, though Europe seemed to have shrunk quite a bit.

It is true: Apple is actually advertising, on television, the benefits of the Macintosh over a Windows PC. Amazing. The ads are clever, entertaining, and informative. Maybe this will be the start of reminding the PC world that, yes, Apple still makes computers, and not just iPods. Check out the ads at this link.

Last week I discussed how to do a basic installation of OSX. This week I will discuss different options you can choose (or may have to choose) during the installation process. Some of these options will save you hard drive space, and also shorten the installation time. Once again, the screen shots are from a 10.3 install, and may vary slightly for other versions of OSX.
I’ll start from the point where you are prompted to choose the drive that you would like to install OSX onto. Hopefully, you see the green arrow I mentioned last week, which means you can proceed. For instructions prior to this step see Macspiration #32.

I imagine that most people who come to this site are Mac fans and/or Mac users. Far be it for me to criticize Apple and its hardware policies, but desktop machines need big drives. Apple in the past didn’t always do that for you except when you custom ordered machines from their website. That’s all good and well, but sometimes there’s not much choice when you buy a machine from them. Like when you buy a refurbished Mac. You pretty much have to just deal with whatever the default RAM or hard drive is installed.
