John: How do I understand Apple’s alleged benchmarks, Guy?
Guy: Benchmarks are like idiot bosses and opinions. Everyone has one and their usefulness depends on what expectations you have going in. Apple is in the business of selling computers and these are the first batch to use Intel processors. When you purchase a new electronic doo-dad, I can’t imagine a major promotion point is going to be that they aren’t going to work as well as what you already have The last thing they are going to do is emphasize that certain things are going to be slower (like existing PPC apps) or impossible (like Classic apps).. Imagine the advertising slogan: “WOW! IT’S SLOWER AND NOT AS CAPABLE! BUY ONE TODAY!” Yeah, that’s thinking different alright.

The iAtariMac is for sale! IRS looming near!
Every once in a while, the IRS comes calling on lowly and broke small business people, demanding money they simply don’t have. That is the case here. You see, the IRS feels that I, and MyMac.com, really should fork over almost $6,000, and while I would love to tell them “No, and don’t bother me again!” I have been told that this is not really a good idea. Boy, if you can’t say no to the IRS, who CAN you say no to?
With luck, I think I have come up with a solution. You see, two years ago, we created a fun video program (four episodes) called “MacMOD.” The program showcased the efforts of Chad Perry (my Podcast co-host) and myself trying, and succeeding, to turn an Atari 2600 into a Macintosh computer. It was fun, got a lot of attention when it was released online, and led to magazine and online articles about the project.
So here I sit, with IRS bill in hand, wondering how in the world I am going to raise the money to pay them off. And then, inspiration! Why not simply sell the Atari Macintosh we built, christened the iAtariMac, to a MyMac.com reader? And more, throw in a perfectly good G3 PowerBook as well. (Lombard 400MHz, works like a charm, but needs a new battery)

I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s when the arcade was the place to go to play the latest and greatest arcade games. We had PacMan, Frogger, Ms. PacMan, etc. If you’re like me, you still like those games better some of the 100 button games you can play on today’s consoles. Well, you don’t need an arcade or a console to play some of these classics. You only need your Mac and the Internet.
Here’s a list of some classic game clones that are totally free- no quarters required.:
1. Pac The Man by McSebi Software – http://www.mcsebi.com/pacx.php- Newly updated, this is the best PacMan and Ms. PacMan clone out there. You can even make your own levels.
Here’s the February edition of your friendly Computer Tutor’s month of questions and answers on a wide range of everyday topics and problems. Your comments and rebuttals are always welcome, in our Article Discussion area below (free registration is required).
Q#32: Why doesn’t Spotlight show all the folders or files for a mini-search, activated by clicking on the little icon upper right in my Menu Bar?
A#32: To save space. When you need more items, click on SHOW ALL for each different category.
Q#33: How do I remove unwanted Dashboard widgets from my Desktop?
A#33: Click on the plus sign with a circle around it, lower left, when your Dashboard widgets are active on your screen, then click on an X to close each undesired widget.

Don is away in Hawaii so Ed, Holly, and I will be manning the Kibbles helm this week (and for the next several weeks). If you have ideas for articles for the newsletter or discussions for the Dog Food for Thought Pawcast, let us know. Your wish is our command!
It’s been a quiet week for Apple, with no new announcements. CeBIT is going on now in Hanover, Germany. CeBIT is the “world’s largest trade fair showcasing digital IT and telecommunications solutions for home and work environments.” You may have heard that Microsoft et al were to announce products called UMPCs (Ultra Mobile PCs) – better known in the Apple world as Newtons. The products announced at the show a few days ago are really just prototypes, with battery time limited to about 15 minutes. (Now that’s some microprocessing!)
Tim and Chad catch up on reader feedback, announce the three winners of the Microsoft Office 2004 contest, look at the latest Mac and Apple news, and talk about why the Mac mini is not a Media Center, and what Apple would or should do to make it one.

The sites, smells, and sounds of Macworld! Oh wait. I didn’t go this year. I actually haven’t been to a Macworld show since the very last New York show. No matter, our MyMac crew did a great job in providing coverage and more than a few laughs especially when calling in during the nightly podcasts from Tim and Chad. I’m planning on going next year by hook or crook. I will remember to bring comfortable shoes.

Popular software products are money making machines. Photoshop has dozens of books because it is such a complex piece of engineering. Photoshop is really designed for professionals, but because many mistakenly confuse professional with quality, it is popular among dabblers and armatures as well. I personally think that using photoshop for “dabblers” is like killing flies with a shotgun. Some pro-sumers certainly do need the power, many just don’t look for lighter and easier to learn packages. But you need to keep the target audience in mind, for the books I’m reviewing:

For this article I’m going to do something a little different. I recently received an email, from a new Mac user, asking about a Mac newsletter. While I don’t have one, there are many websites which one might consider a daily Mac newsletter. I listed a few sites for the emailer to check out, and I thought it might be a good idea to write an article with a list of sites for other Mac users.
Therefore, for this article I am going to make a list of Apple/Mac news sites that you might know about, or your might not know about. I’m not going to stop there. I’m also going to list some rumor sites for the latest Apple/Mac rumors, and some sites for downloading some great Mac software. In total, there will be 25 sites for you to check out, to celebrate Macspiration 25.

Everyone around here is telling me I am in “one foot out the door” mode for pre-vacation. It seems like I am working harder than ever but I guess they see that faraway look in my eyes at the prospect of lounging around in bare feet and swimming trunks while they shovel snow and bundle up. I recorded our next Dog Food for Thought Pawcast this week with an interview with Rick Estes from QuickerTek and a debate with Ed about whether the new Mac mini is truly a “media center.” We are continuing that debate on Barkings <www.blog.smalldog.com> and in this issue of Kibbles & Bytes in our Point/Counterpoint with Morgan and I going head to head!

The iMac, the new Mac Mini and MacBook Pro all ship with Front Row (and a remote control), allowing you to bring your Videos, DVDs, Music, and Photos from your Mac to your living room. Except for the new Mac Mini none of these was really designed to sit next to your TV, and I have to congratulate the Apple team to finally recognizing the perfect form factor. When I originally wrote this review (last week) a Mac Mini next to my TV was still a project and now all you have to do is go down to the shop. But hang on, that Mac Mini G4 of yours is still going to be up to the task, all you need is the right software.
