Garage Band Loops Contest Heats Up!
So far, there has been quite a few really good contestant songs entered into our Garage Band Loops contest, which you can learn more about here.
Some are really, really bad. If your song is fifteen seconds consisting of three different drum loops, I think you chances of winning are pretty slim.
I am amazed, though, at the creativity some have shown to create a song using only the loops in the stock shipping version of the GarageBand application. Then again, coming from Mac users, I suppose I should not be.

The Whacky World of Job Interviews.
“Meet the new Boss. Same as the old Boss.”– The Who.
Many are the days I feel pretty darn lucky. You see, I work as a technician in the technology sector, and I’m still employed. These days, that almost give me exalted status. I’ve been with my present employer for seven years now, and it all seems stable, at least for the moment. It could change, with little or no notice. I’m all too aware of that nasty little fact. But, I have not always been this fortunate. I have been laid off many times over the past twenty-five years, and for seventeen months, from June of ’91 until November of ‘92; I was totally out of work, along with many others. Basically, it sucked. Unemployment compensation barely covers the living expenses of even the lowest paid wage earners here in Massachusetts. It gets to a point where you begin to wonder if you are going to work again or not. Your unemployment compensation benefits run out, and you begin to look at things like retail store jobs with envy. Some people who find themselves out of work try to pursue dreams, such as starting their own business. If you think you can do it, emotionally and physically, I say more power to you, but try to be objective about it before taking the plunge. Some people change careers altogether. I once knew a man with the almighty Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, who became very fed up with the entire high tech game. He went into the hotel management field. He had the right personality for that line of work, so I would guess he’s happier, wherever life has taken him.

My search for the perfect case for my new 17” PowerBook continues (please see my comments from the MacWorld Expo and my review of another bag on this site.) As I reported in the past, I am the proud owner of a new 17” PowerBook. That is the good news. The bad news is that it is so big, actually finding a comfortable, well made, useful case to carry it around has been an on-going challenge. As I have said in the past, there is no perfect bag, but I plan to keep looking until I get close.

It stands to reason that everything has a lifespan, including your favorite new technological tool, that new PC or Mac on your desk. This is called product life span, and your brand new computer is most of the way through its life span toward extinction already.
“No way!” You say? “Not my brand new, very expensive PowerBook!”
The whole personal computer industry is busy following Moore’s Law. So they are bringing us faster CPUs, bigger capacity hard drives, cheaper RAM, and smaller machines. Yet everything has a logical limit. Personal computers are no exception. In a few short years there will be terahertz-processing speeds instead of gigahertz. It is possible that with the new light circuits, gates, and processors, even those amazing speeds will seem excessively slow. The good news is that real broadband will have finally arrived.

by John “Nemo” and David Weeks, with help from Barbara “Mrs. Nemo”
La Encantada is Tucson’s first upscale shopping complex, featuring usual-suspects franchise and regional retailers. At midnight last Friday night, MacDevotees were camping out under cover from a rare all-night rain storm, Arizona style. When our Apple store opened at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, 599 people were in a line snaking past A-J’s, the ultra-foodie grocery emporium fifty yards in the distance.
When Weeks, Nemo, and Barbara arrived an hour later, our wait was a only few minutes to enter and become eligible to receive opening day t-shirts. By noon, people could stroll right in, but the 1,000 shirts were gone. That’s a lot of people for a smallish storefront business in two hours. A good time was had by all, believe me!

Our Tucson Mac Users Group had a strong presence all morning, led by hard-working president Ridge Prevost.
