Since John and I have taken different approaches to the conference, I thought I would drop a few notes on what I see, and don’t see here at Macworld, and also a few overheard comments in and around the conference.

Only in California: Or maybe, only around Macintosh? I live in Oakland, CA, right across the large pond from San Francisco. As anyone familiar with the area will tell you, driving the 12 miles from my home in Oakland to downtown SF can take over an hour (on a good day) and even longer to make the same trip home. Driving out of the downtown convention area at 6 PM is hell; you are lucky to get 1 block every 10 minutes. So I take BART, the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, which is only a few miles from my home and a short 3-block walk to the convention center.

Macworld San Francisco 2004 Special Report #6

On January 8, 2004, in Macworld Expo, by John Nemerovski

Two more days to go — Wednesday night commentary on first two days of 2004

Macworld Conference & Expo

So VERY appreciative of San Francisco Nemo relatives for providing place to stay, write, and eat, plus generous family to spend a little time together when I’m away briefly from Moscone Center downtown. Six Nemos had delightful dinner together tonight at Max’s Opera Cafe, corner Van Ness and Golden Gate. Terrific food and entertainment, affordable with good service. Recommended. Come early when opera is in season.

Made two pages of notes waiting for others to arrive. Probably not able to get all scribbled on Tekserve loaner iBook tonight, but will try to be comprehensive and coherent. Said farewell to new colleague Owen Rubin before departing Moscone. He REALLY made the Macworld experience a winner for me, and will soon begin to publish features and reviews on a multitude of topics.

Macworld San Francisco 2004 Special Report #5

On January 7, 2004, in Macworld Expo, by John Nemerovski

I went through a conversion of sorts during the night, after submitting Tuesday’s second set of Macworld Conference and Expo photos, plus wrap-up thoughts. Wonderful what five hours of solid sleep can do to restore Nemo’s sense of perspective.

I’ve been taking this whole Macworld media rep situation way to seriously, as residue from past two years working intensely with David Weeks on comprehensive coverage. If Steve Jobs can have fun with a few million people, pretending to be a musician, Nemo can have fun with a few thousand people, pretending to be a reporter and photographer.

An iPod for the Rest of Us?

On January 6, 2004, in iPod, Original Blog, by Russ Walkowich

Well, Mr. Jobs went onstage today and introduced the iPod mini, something that the rumor sites and some of the big news sources had been buzzing about for the past week or so.

But is it an iPod for the rest of us? Don’t think so and here’s why:

Macworld San Francisco 2004 Special Report #1 & 2 Photos

On January 6, 2004, in Features, by John Nemerovski

As promised, here are a few photos of the journey to San Francisco. Be sure to come back durning the day for up-to-date photos of Macworld Expo!

South End Maze, San Fran!

Golden Gate Bridge! At dusk.

It’s late and I’m tired but I need to get some thoughts out of my crowded brain before attempting to sleep. Big day today. Bigger day tomorrow planned. Tremendous help at Macworld from Owen Rubin, new MyMac.com contributor. Sensational to have Tekserve iBook, making all our coverage possible. Missing old pal David Weeks, unable to attend this year. Outstanding support from publisher Tim Robertson, who organizes and posts all our submissions.

Impossible for Nemo to go to press conferences, take photos, prepare JPGs for publication, cover showroom floor, type up coherent thoughts, listen to speakers, and 999 other things I would like to be able to do. Taking it one thing at a time, meaning less quantity but better depth. Are photos satisfactory for you? Let me know. Ditto for articles. What did we miss, and where did we hit home runs?

Macworld San Francisco 2004 Special Report #2

On January 6, 2004, in Macworld Expo, by John Nemerovski

I left you in suspense, not being able to finish part one. Wrote that first segment in Moscone Media Room (#104, under south escalator, if you’re looking for Nemo + Rubin) on an eMac provided by the conference. Wanted to try Panther out on the eMac. It’s okay, but not as swift as I would like. Room for improvement in OS X performance? Yes, indeed. Will compare to mighty Tekserve iBook tomorrow, which boots into OS 9.2.2.

Don’t ask! The reason I prefer OS 9 to X on a 500 MHz / 384 MB iBook G3 is “obvious,” meaning it works in X but is MUCH more zippy in 9, and timing is everything at Macworld for this reporter. Give me dirty looks if you wish, but please first provide an AluBook 15″ G4 with a gig of memory. Onward and upward.

E-Rate for Education: It Could Have Been So Simple

On January 5, 2004, in Opinion, by Mark Marcantonio

In 1996, after a dozen or so years of debate Congress passed and President Clinton signed the Telecommunications Act of 1996. One of its provisions was a small tax placed on cable and phone bills. For the 2003-04 school year it amounts to 1.65 BILLION dollars. The money is placed into a fund to be dispersed to public and private schools to assist in the development of the technology infrastructure of schools. The original idea and goal was so simple and worthy. Unfortunately, the federal government, in its good-natured but bureaucratic-happy fashion, created a funding delivery system that keeps students from seeing the financial benefits.

How It Works
At the beginning of each school year, an administrator or school technologists begin filling out forms. The key question being how many students qualify for free or reduced lunches. Certain forms are due by certain dates. I should point out that E-Rate administrators and workers do a tremendous job by all accounts. Administrators have over the years streamlining and demystified the process considerably. The department employees are quick to contact and assist with any question or correction. Monies that are received can go for the purchasing of physical infrastructure or services except computer hardware. Usually, this means wiring or phone/internet service costs.

Macworld San Francisco 2004 Special Report #1

On January 5, 2004, in Macworld Expo, by John Nemerovski

Macworld San Francisco 2004 Special Report #1 by John Nemerovski, with support from Owen Rubin

Thanks in advance for reading our series of commentaries and reports, live from the showroom floor at 2004’s Macworld Conference & Expo, held at Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco. I’ll be submitting articles, as will our newest writer, Owen Rubin. Here’s my preview diary.

Departed home in Tucson early, driving 110 miles up to Phoenix for the flight to Oakland airport. Huge crowds at PHX, due to the post-holiday period. Travelers were patient, cheerful sheep, waiting in enormous lines for check in, security, and boarding. Why is this process so awful, and so necessary.

Take Control of Customizing Panther

TidBITS Electronic Publishing http://www.tidbits.com/takecontrol
US $ 5.00 online purchases only

Veteran writer and long-time TidBITS contributor Matt Neuburg has penned the second installment in the Take Control series of e-books. In case you’re not familiar with this series of online-purchased e-books (See here and here), just know that they’re great short instruction manuals for learning about specific areas of Mac OS X.

With each succeeding release of Mac OS X, Apple packs more features under the hood. Unfortunately, the average user may not be able to find how to access these new features, let alone understand how to take best advantage of them. Take Control of Customizing Panther (TCCP for short) will show you how to make Panther look and feel just the way you like.
