DesignJet 10ps
Company: Hewlett-Packard

Price: $829.00

For graphic designers, accurate color output is a must. While many home Mac users are fine with an inexpensive ink-jet printer, designers need a post-script printer, good color-management tools, and reliable printing. Enter the DesignJet 10ps, a true post-script six color 2400 x 1200 dpi, and is touted by Hp to be able to reproduce 90% of the pantone color library.

Set-up is relatively simple. The DesignJet 10ps uses your Mac as the software RIP, rather than a more conventional network RIP (raster image processor) more generally found in large print shops and design studios. The DesignJet 10ps is not a networkable printer, but a stand-alone unit for one user. The solo graphic designer can rejoice, however, because you can use USB Print sharing with the DesignJet 10ps, making the unit somewhat a network printer. However, USB Print Sharing is a slow process, and those designers needing to share a large-format post-script printer would do well to look at the DesignJet 20ps, the $1,400 cousin of this printer.

When you wander the shelves of your favorite bricks-and-mortar bookstore, or click through your favorite on-line book vendor, the choice of iTunes/iPhoto/iMovie/iDVD “How-To” books can be overwhelming.
Some people prefer graphically-oriented books that use little text, like the Visual QuickStart series. Others prefer text-heavy books with few graphics. Jim Heid has successfully split the difference with The Macintosh iLife, an interactive guide to iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD. While Heid uses the most recent versions of these applications (iTunes 3, iPhoto 2, iMovie 3, and iDVD 2), owners of older versions will still be able to enjoy the book.

The Great American Camcorder Hunt

On May 1, 2003, in Opinion, by Chris Seibold

If you have a semi-recent Mac, you’ve got iMovie. If you’ve got iMovie you have one of the most fun programs ever devised. Of course you’ll never know just how great iMovie is, just how much fun it can be, if you don’t have a digital camcorder. This is because a digital camcorder is the price of admission for iMovie. Having just recently spent a lot of time trying to decide on a camcorder, deciding on the camcorder and then realizing I lack the requisite cash for the camcorder (I’m saving up) I will pass my accumulated knowledge, be it ever so meager, onto all those who wish to sup at Chris Seibold’s big plate of camcorder shopping frustration.
