Scanning – An Introduction in 800 Words

On November 25, 2002, in How-To, Opinion, by John Nemerovski

STUPID OR SMART?

A scanner is a stupid one-trick pony. It can only do one thing — transfer a digital image to a computer. Why are there so few songs about scanners, and why are they misunderstood?

If you are already comfortable with your scanner, computer, and software, go do something creative instead of rehashing material you understand. But if you feel you need assistance (or perhaps psychotherapy) due to problems with your scanner, stick around and learn how to become comfortable with it.

HOW DOES IT KNOW?

Thrift Store Browser

On November 25, 2002, in Opinion, by Trixie McGuire

I am a thrift store browser. I collect – everything – right now I am into retro computers! I’ve been the depression glass etc… route -but- and there always seems to be a butt – doesn’t there – when you have one or two or three of everything – you need to move on!

Today I set my mother up with a windoze ’95 computer so she could take advantage of the three free months of @aol.com we signed her up for. My mother is 77-you’ve got to keep those neurons working in the brain! We have a cable internet connection, but – here I am at butt again – CompUSA had a deal we couldn’t pass up – three free games (cheap ones we’ll never use – but. . . ), three free months of AOL and 50, yeah 50 CD-R’s Anyway – back to my mother’s other computer – I should say Thee Computer-Macintosh – Quatra 840AV – nice computer -butt- she couldn’t get dial up – so we gave it to my 10 year old nephew. An older nephew was there at the time and laughed about the old Mac and says – hey I wouldn’t even steal a Mac – and me – I have four right fine Mac’s all networked together – I handed him a piece of paper and says – make me out a list of what you wouldn’t steal and I will go in on one of my Mac and type up a list and pass it out to family and friends – titled: Things to Keep in Mind for Future Purchases!

Author: Jesse Feiler

Publisher: McGraw Hill/ Osborne
Price: 24.99
ISBN: 0072225548

Imagine for a moment that you have a spiffy new iMac and further suppose that you want to use it to make all kinds of multimedia. Heck if you have a newish Mac you know it comes pre loaded with iTunes for music, iPhoto for pics, iMovie for making your own movies and iDVD for cramming that newly made movie on a DVD disc. That’s a lot of programs to take in all at once and if you have a new Mac you also know that the manuals are nonexistent. So are you left running out to buy a book for each program? Maybe not, perhaps Jesse Feiler’s book “Making Movies, Photos, Music and DVDs on Your Mac” can answer your specific needs for a fraction of the price of four individual tomes and with a good deal more depth than an all-encompassing Mac reference.

Review

On November 8, 2002, in Review, by Adam Karneboge

Stuffit Deluxe 7.0.1
OS X Compatible

Company: Aladdin Systems, Inc.
Price: $79.95
http://www.aladdinsys.com

Every month or so I burn myself a CD of all of my most frequently used utilities so I can install them on my machines with ease. These utilities are those that are indispensable, ones that have to be on my Macintosh in order for me to be productive. They are the kind that should come pre-installed with every version of the Mac OS. They’re exclusive, and one of them that I have used practically the entire time I have owned a Macintosh is Aladdin Systems’ Stuffit Deluxe.

Aladdin has featured support for Mac OS X since version 6.0 of their software, but it was not until version 6.5 that Stuffit was truly a primetime OS X application. In version 7.0, Aladdin Systems has made Stuffit Deluxe even more compatible and useful within Apple’s next-generation operating system, and has added some next generation capabilities of their own.

Don’t Hang Up!
The Unpublished last story from Ralph

On November 6, 2002, in Opinion, by Ralph J Luciani

Of the many mental pictures that remain of the vicious attack on the World Trade Center, one has stood out for me. It was of a young woman, six months pregnant, who was desperately searching for her husband with a wedding photo. His office was located on the upper floors of the South Tower. The personal tragedy that these innocent victims experienced and the strength and moral courage they exhibited will stay with me always.

Don’t Hang Up!

In the New York suburb of Yonkers twelve year old Kevin Strothers was already working on his English assignment for the next day. It was early September and there would be no holiday to celebrate the day off school while his teachers participated in their professional development activities. His mother, Allison, was in her bedroom preparing for her business trip. He glanced out his window at the early morning sun and the yard with the remnants of Sunday’s family reunion. Some of the balloons were still bouncing in the breeze while others had shriveled into a knot of plastic.
